Surgery Shines at 2019 Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards

Drs. Konstantinos Makris, Stephanie Gordy, Eric J. Silberfein, and Shayan Izaddoost, are the 2019 recipients of the Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards.
The Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Award (formerly the Fulbright & Jaworski LLP Faculty Excellence Award) is a criterion-based program that recognizes faculty contributions in four categories: Teaching and Evaluation, Development of Enduring Educational Materials, Educational Leadership, and Educational Research.
Konstantinos Makris, M.D. is an assistant professor of surgery in the Division of General Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and director of the Endocrine Surgery Program at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Dr. Makris graduated cum laude from the University of Athens Medical School in Greece. He received his General Surgery training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester and Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha. He completed fellowship training in Advanced Laparoscopy and Surgical Endoscopy at Legacy Health in Portland, as well as further training in Endocrine Surgery at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Makris specializes in general surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive surgery, benign foregut diseases, and endocrine surgery. He is the author of numerous articles, scientific abstracts, and book chapters. Among other notable achievements, he has received awards and acknowledgments by the American College of Surgeons for his participation in a contest on surgical knowledge and an essay writing competition. Dr. Makris won the award for Teaching and Evaluation.
Stephanie Gordy, M.D., is an assistant professor of surgery and the director of the Surgery Core Clerkship in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. She is also an acute care surgeon at Ben Taub Hospital, where she is the Surgery Residency site director and the UME Clerkship site director. Dr. Gordy received her M.D. from Mercer University School of Medicine and completed her residency at Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, Ga. After completing a fellowship in surgical critical care at Oregon Health and Science University, Dr. Gordy was hired as an assistant professor of surgery in the Department of Trauma, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care at OHSU. She joined Baylor Department of Surgery in 2013. Dr. Gordy is board certified in Surgical Critical Care and General Surgery by the American Board of Surgery. She has authored several publications and book chapters, and she is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Gordy won the award for Teaching and Evaluation.
Eric J. Silberfein, M.D., is an associate professor of surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology at Baylor College of Medicine. He is also the associate program director for the General Surgery Residency at Baylor and chief of Surgical Oncology at Ben Taub Hospital. Dr. Silberfein dedicates his time to caring for the underserved population of Houston and has a passion for furthering the education of residents and medical students by improving their knowledge and skills through formal curriculum. His research interests include the natural history of solid organ tumors and the multidisciplinary therapy of solid organ malignancy. Besides his other appointments, Dr. Silberfein serves as cancer liaison physician for the Commission on Cancer in the American College of Surgeons and represents the Association of American Medical Colleges as a member of the Council of Faculty and Academic Societies. He has published multiple papers in the peer-reviewed journals, and he holds membership in nine surgical and professional societies. Dr. Silberfein won the award for Educational Leadership.
Shayan Izaddoost, M.D. Ph.D., is an associate professor of surgery and molecular and cellular biology and director of network development in the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Izaddoost also serves as program director of the Plastic Surgery Integrated Residency and the DeBakey Summer Surgery Program, and he is chief of Plastic Surgery at Ben Taub Hospital. Dr. Izaddoost began his career at Baylor College of Medicine as a medical student. He earned his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees and trained as a resident in plastic surgery. Dr. Izaddoost has a particular interest in the area of breast reconstruction and assists breast cancer survivors in recapturing aesthetic form using techniques such as DIEP flap, fat grafting, and implant-based breast reconstruction. Dr. Izaddoost has been named a top doctor by Houstonia Magazine and a Super Doctor by Texas Monthly. He is also a fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a diplomate in the American Board of Plastic Surgery, and he was president of Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2018. Dr. Izaddoost won the award for Educational Leadership.
