The Division of Pediatric Tropical Medicine is primarily focused on emerging and neglected tropical infectious diseases and conditions with significant unmet medical needs. The division encompasses the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, along with several affiliated research laboratories. It also supports the educational, clinical, and policy initiatives of the National School of Tropical Medicine.
Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development
The Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children's Hospital operates across disciplines to research, develop, and advance vaccines targeting neglected and emerging infectious diseases. These efforts focus on addressing illnesses that disproportionately impact the world’s most vulnerable and underserved populations.
Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) Facility
The Feigin Tower Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) Facility, supported by Texas Children’s Hospital, is dedicated to the study of high-risk pathogens that require specialized containment. Research conducted in this facility adheres to rigorous safety protocols, including advanced containment measures, the use of personal protective equipment, and comprehensive training to ensure the safe handling of these infectious agents.
Tropical Medicine Research Laboratories
The Tropical Medicine Research Laboratories conduct both fundamental and translational research across specialized disciplines to support the development of new vaccines, therapeutics, and diagnostics. These efforts are aimed at combating neglected tropical diseases associated with poverty, as well as zoonotic infectious diseases that pose significant global health threats.
