Diploma in Tropical Medicine

Live Information Session

The Baylor College of Medicine National School of Tropical Medicine hosts a live online information session at 5 p.m. CST on Thursday, April 23. To join virtually, email tropmed@bcm.edu. 

Earn Your Diploma in Tropical Medicine

As the COVID-19 pandemic has clearly illustrates, the borders that once held diseases in check have disappeared. Tropical diseases, once confined to certain geographic locales are no longer bound by borders. Professionals are needed in communities around the globe to diagnosis and treat these diseases, which disproportionality impact the bottom billion – the world’s poorest people.

The Baylor College of Medicine National School of Tropical Medicine Diploma Course in Tropical Medicine will give you the knowledge, skills and confidence to care for patients at risk for these diseases.

Dr. Joy Mackey gave a session about Macgyvering resources in emergency situations. Students were broken into groups including an online Zoom group. They were given cases and had to solve the medical problems with the materials that they found in the room.

Curriculum and Schedules

The curriculum is comprised of three modules.

The Diploma in Tropical Medicine consists of three modules and lab practical. The course is accredited by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. With this accreditation, participants who complete the course are eligible to apply for the ASTMH Certificate of Knowledge Examination (provided additional examination application criteria are met). This examination assesses and recognizes individual excellence in training and knowledge in clinical tropical medicine and travelers' health. Passing this examination leads to the highly regarded CTropMed®-Certificate of Knowledge in Clinical Tropical Medicine and Travelers' Health.

Hands-on experience: Graduates of our program consistently cite the laboratory experience as among the most beneficial aspects of our program. Working in state-of-the-art Tropical Medicine teaching laboratory, participants gain hands-on experience in identifying and distinguishing parasites and parasitic eggs in samples; preparing samples for observation; and other skills they will need for working in the field whether in a well-equipped laboratory or in a resource poor setting.

Engaging lectures with faculty invested in your success: Our faculty present complex medical ideas as people with illnesses rather than impersonal disease complexes. This approach keeps lectures engaging facilitating mastery of our highly demanding curriculum. Our graduates report ongoing relationships with faculty long after they complete the course, providing mentorship and guidance to help them reach their career goals.

Leaders in Tropical Medicine

Our faculty are international leaders in research, clinical care, public policy and education related to neglected poverty diseases. Collaborations

The National School of Tropical Medicine works closely with other Baylor College of Medicine initiatives focused on global health to train healthcare providers to diagnosis and treat tropical diseases. These include the Global Health Pathway and the Baylor International Pediatric AIDS Initiative.
