Welcome to the Education Technology (Ed-Tech) information and support homepage provided by Academic Technologies. We promote and support effective integration of technology in teaching and learning.
Ed-Tech is a wide-ranging topic that includes types of media (e.g. audio, video, text), technology applications, and hardware to support various delivery modes (online, in-person, and hybrid). BCM Academic Technologies centrally manages educational technologies available to all Baylor College of Medicine instructors, staff, and students. These enterprise-level technologies allow instructors to manage, share, and develop course materials and facilitate students and trainees learning through communication and collaboration technologies.
This page is devoted to supporting BCM faculty, staff, and students with the successful implementation of education technology.
Getting Started at BCM

BCM has two WiFi channels:
- BCM Internet - No access to BCM resources. The intended audience is students and guests.
- BCM Wifi - must use your BCM username and password for access to all resources.

Ethernet is the most common type of local area network (LAN) technology, and it involves a hardwired connection to the internet through Ethernet cables (either blue or yellow).
Ethernet has the benefit of being faster than Wi-Fi thanks to its use of cables for a wired connection and its lack of reliance on radio waves; it also happens to be more stable and secure for the same reasons.
Advantages of Ethernet
- Speed: An Ethernet connection is almost always faster than Wi-Fi because it uses a cable to transfer data nearly instantaneously, whereas a wireless network relies on the comparatively slow and diffuse transfer of data over radio waves.
- Stability: By the same token, Ethernet tends to make for a more stable connection to the internet than Wi-Fi, as its tethered cables provide a stability that a dependency on wireless frequencies can't consistently offer.
- Security: Ethernet connections are also more secure since BCM IT can control who has access to the network; if someone isn't connected to the network, they have no access to its data and devices.
How to get connected
- Plug in the ethernet adapter. (Complete this step if your device does NOT have an ethernet port). (Here’s an example of a usb-c ethernet adapter)
- Plug in the ethernet cable. (If you have an ethernet port, connect directly into your laptop ethernet port. If you have an ethernet adapter, connect to the ethernet adapter.)
- Depending on your device, the laptop should connect automatically and configure the laptop to use ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
Here’s how you ensure your wired connection is active.
- On Windows: Select the Start button, then select Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- On Macs: choose Apple menu > System Settings, then click Network in the sidebar. (You may need to scroll down.)
- View the network connection status on the right. A green, yellow, red, or gray status indicator appears below the service name.
Description: Baylor College of Medicine’s VPN solution allows employees/students who are connected to the Internet through their own private connection (DSL, cable modem, AT&T U-verse, etc.) to access BCM computing resources as if they were physically connected to Baylor’s network.
Availability: In order to use a VPN connection, you will be required to install and configure the VPN software on the computer that you will use to remotely connect to the Baylor network. BCM Office of Information Technology provides the VPN software client and the instructions to download and install it.
Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Six-digit token created by Google Authenticator for BCM authentication.
- Multi-Factor Authentication is required to connect to VPN, Webmail, and other systems.

Communication via email is available to all faculty, staff, students, and alumni and can be accessed through a web browser, by traditional email client (i.e. Microsoft Outlook, Mail, etc.), or on a mobile device. So whether you are onsite or in another country, you can access your Baylor email. Additionally, BCM provides for an unlimited amount of email storage.
