Medical Student Elective

Med-Peds Ambulatory Rotation Med (450) 587 or Pedi (520) 556

The Baylor Medicine-Pediatrics program has established a community based primary care practice in combined internal medicine and pediatrics. Medicine-Pediatrics trained physician's staff the practice. This rotation offers interested medical students the opportunity to participate in the healthcare of a broad age range of patients in a community outpatient setting. The practice provides a full spectrum of primary health care needs for newborns, infants, children, adolescents, adults and the elderly. In addition to the outpatient management of acute and chronic illness, issues regarding the preventative health maintenance of children, adolescents and adults as well as women's health are stressed.

The clinic population represents numerous diverse cultural backgrounds and the majority of these patients are underinsured or do not have health insurance. The clinic is located outside the medical center in at the Martin Luther King Community Health Center located at 3550 Swingle Road. In addition to working in the clinic, the medical student will also be given the opportunity to attend adolescent medicine clinic at Ben Taub Hospital, the Transitional Medicine Clinic at the Baylor Clinic and join a Med-Peds physician in his private practice for a day. There will also be additional exposure to learning how to give immunizations and participate in standard outpatient treatments.

The course is listed in the Medicine Department electives as MEMED-587. Electives are requested through Office of the Registrar in Student Affairs. For visiting medical students, please click this link for the Visiting Medical Student Elective Program at Baylor College of Medicine for information on how to request this elective.
