Simulation-based Surgical Education

Microsurgery

Fundamentals of Microsurgery Course

Through one-on-one laboratory instruction and supplemental videos, this Microsurgery Course offers 20 hours (4 days) of intensive training in microsurgical techniques for residents, fellows, and practicing surgeons. Upon completion of the course, each participant should have acquired the fundamental microsurgical skills necessary to successfully and confidently dissect, resect, manipulate, and repair small vessels.

Employing state-of-the-art, dual-head operating room microscopes, micro-instruments, micro-suture, animate models, laboratory teaching tissues, and non-tissues models, the instructor closely monitors the learning process and provides guidance, assistance, feedback, and skill evaluation throughout the entire course. The course specifically emphasizes proficiency in a patent microvascular, and neural anastomosis, tailored to each participant's specialty and areas of interest.

Upon successful completion of all requirements, each student will earn a Certificate of Training issued by The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.

Programs

The SAGES Fundamental Use of Surgical Energy (FUSE) program is an educational program comprised of an interactive web-based multimedia-enhanced didactic curriculum and an online multiple-choice cognitive exam. The program is being designed to certify that a successful candidate has the demonstrated knowledge fundamental to the safe use of surgical energy-based devices in the operating room, endoscopic suite, and other procedural areas.

  • FUSE Certification

FUSE Program with Accreditation Exam

Anyone may take the exam, including allied healthcare professionals, medical students, non-medical professionals, and others with less than 1-year of clinical experience in the operating room; however, the exam is recommended for licensed physicians (including M.D., D.O., and MBBS), surgical technicians, and nurses, who have at least 1 year of OR experience. Reviewing the FUSE online didactic material and completing the Accreditation Exam provides up to 12 CME/CEU credits.

Baylor College of Medicine is a Southwest Region test center for the FUSE exam. You must register for the FUSE exam through SAGES. Please visit the FUSE Program website or consult the Exam Registration Guide for step-by-step instructions on how to register.

Once your appointment is confirmed, please bring the following to the FUSE Testing Session:

  1. FUSE Test Taker Authorization Code
  2. FUSE Test Taker Voucher with Voucher #
  3. Photo I.D.

The SAGES Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) program is a comprehensive educational and assessment tool designed to teach and evaluate the fundamental knowledge, clinical judgment, and technical skills required in the performance of basic gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopic surgery (endoscopy).

The FES program is comprised of two components: education and assessment. The educational piece is a web-based, didactic presentation consisting of 13 interactive, cognitive, content chapters covering basic diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, using rich text, images, and illustrations. The assessment portion contains both a multiple-choice exam and a performance-based manual skills assessment to evaluate technical and psychomotor skills. The skills exam is performed on the Simbionix GI Mentor Simulator.

The goal is to provide residents, gastroenterologists, and surgeons-in-practice with an opportunity to learn the fundamentals of gastrointestinal endoscopy in a consistent, scientifically accepted format and to provide a tool to test cognitive knowledge, technical skills, and clinical judgment, all with the overarching goal of improving the quality of patient care.

Baylor College of Medicine is a Midwest Region test center for the FES exam. You must register for the FES exam through SAGES. Please visit the FES Program Website or consult the Exam Registration Guide for step-by-step instructions on how to register.

Once your appointment is confirmed, please bring the following to the FES Testing Session:

  1. FES Test Taker Authorization Code
  2. FES Test Taker Voucher with Voucher #
  3. Photo I.D.
