Section Overview
- The Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology entered a new chapter of leadership with Dr. Mohamed Othman succeeding Dr. Fasiha Kanwal, building on the section’s longstanding excellence in clinical care, research, and education.
- Faculty maintained a robust research portfolio, securing 19 awards totaling more than $4 million in support, including NIH, CPRIT, foundation, and industry funding focused on digestive diseases, hepatology, artificial intelligence, and translational science.
- Clinical programs continued to expand, highlighted by the Baylor St. Luke’s team completing its 1,000th endoscopic submucosal dissection procedure and the growth of third-space endoscopy services at Ben Taub Hospital and Baylor St. Luke’s Sugar Land.
- Faculty and trainees received numerous honors and national recognition, including election to prestigious professional organizations, institutional excellence awards, and national research distinctions across gastroenterology and hepatology.
- The section remains committed to training the next generation of physician-scientists through its NIH-funded T32 Gastroenterology and Hepatology Research Training Program, fellowship leadership opportunities, and nationally recognized educational initiatives.
- Educational outreach and collaboration continue to thrive through programs such as the 24th Annual GI & Liver Course, hands-on endoscopy workshops, and distinguished lectureships that bring leading experts in digestive health to Baylor College of Medicine.

The section conducts studies into a wide range of digestive and liver diseases, including Barrett's esophagus, colorectal and hepatocellular cancer, and Crohn's disease.

New! Cirrhosis Mortality Model
The Cirrhosis Mortality Model (CiMM) can accurately identify patients with cirrhosis who are at high risk of mortality. This prognostication can guide linkage to care, vigilant surveillance, and proactive care coordination to improve patient outcomes.
