Section Overview
- Faculty secured over a dozen new research awards, including NIH K and R grants, U01s, a P30, and a $39.9M NIH UM1 grant co-led by Dr. Fasiha Kanwal, reinforcing the section’s national leadership in liver and digestive disease research.
- Clinical innovation remains a priority, with all endoscopy units implementing computer-aided detection, the launch of a third-space endoscopy program at MEDVAMC, and the opening of a state-of-the-art standalone Ambulatory Endoscopy Center at Quentin Mease.
- Baylor Medicine Gastroenterology became the first clinic to participate in the IMAGINE Research Program, a national effort to recruit 120,000 participants to accelerate personalized medicine through genetic and health data.
- Faculty received high-profile honors, including Dr. David Graham’s William Beaumont Prize from the AGA and Dr. John Vierling’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the PBCers for his work in biliary cholangitis.
- The section hosted its 24th Annual GI & Hepatology Course, welcomed over 150 participants, and launched the inaugural GI Fellows’ Research Retreat, spotlighting faculty-led research and fostering mentorship in gastroenterology.
- Dr. Fasiha Kanwal co-directed the AGA Women’s Executive Leadership Collaboration Conference, part of a broader commitment to supporting women leaders and advancing equity across gastroenterology and hepatology.

The section conducts studies into a wide range of digestive and liver diseases, including Barrett's esophagus, colorectal and hepatocellular cancer, and Crohn's disease.

New! Cirrhosis Mortality Model
The Cirrhosis Mortality Model (CiMM) can accurately identify patients with cirrhosis who are at high risk of mortality. This prognostication can guide linkage to care, vigilant surveillance, and proactive care coordination to improve patient outcomes.
