Welcome to the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology
We are delighted you are interested in our clinical, scientific, and educational missions. Whether you are a prospective patient, trainee, or collaborator, we invite you to explore all that we offer in advancing digestive health.
Our mission is to improve digestive health through excellence in clinical care, teaching, discovery, and leadership. We are proud to be recognized nationally by U.S. News & World Report – Best Universities for Gastroenterology and Hepatology, which are based on research performance, publications, and scientific reputation.
With over 70 nationally and internationally recognized faculty, we deliver innovative care across the full spectrum of digestive diseases, from general gastroenterology (GI) to IBD, neurogastroenterology, pancreatic disorders, GI cancers, and transplant hepatology. Our faculty have authored national guidelines in nearly every therapeutic area.
We provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art patient care across leading institutions, including Baylor St. Luke’s McNair Campus, Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Ben Taub Hospital, and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, and are expanding services at Texas Children’s Hospital and St. Luke’s Health Sugarland.
Our faculty continue to secure new grants, spanning pilot awards to major NIH mechanisms (K, R, U01, P30, UM1). The section serves as the clinical home for the NIH-funded Texas Medical Center Digestive Diseases Center, led by Dr. Hashem El-Serag, Chair of the Department of Medicine. Faculty received national recognition, including the AGA’s 2024 William Beaumont Prize (Dr. David Graham), lifetime achievement honors (Dr. John Vierling), and competitive awards in diagnostics and health equity (Drs. Natalie Khalaf and Richa Shukla).
Education and training are central to our mission. We offer a highly competitive fellowship program with clinical and NIH-funded research tracks, the only NIH-supported adult GI research training grant in Texas and neighboring states. Additionally, we offer transplant hepatology and advanced endoscopy fellowships.
With over $50 million in research funding, including the Texas Medical Center Digestive Diseases Center, our section is a leader in GI and liver research, driven by the dedication of our exceptional faculty, fellows, and staff.
Thank you for visiting,
