At the end of the first year, fellows in the Academic Clinical Track are expected to choose a project mentor and develop the outline of a research project. The mentor will help identify the resources required to carry out the research project.
During the second and third years, the fellow will execute the research project with the goal of producing a tangible publication. It is expected that preliminary work from the research project will be submitted in abstract form either to the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology or American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.

- Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center
Fellows Resources
- Protected research time: Three months during the second year and, depending on the project, additional months during the third year
- Educational fund: $1,000 annually for journal subscriptions, board review courses, travel for conferences or research software
