Gastroenterology Fellowship Didactic

Lectures

Monday Fellows Lecture

Monday conferences are held weekly from 5 to 6 p.m., starting in the fall. Lecture topics rotate and include epidemiology, motility, GI radiology, GI pathology and quality improvement. This is a mandatory lecture for all fellows and time is protected to attend during inpatient services. These lectures are held virtually.

Thursday Fellows Lecture

Thursday conferences are held weekly from 7:15 to 8 a.m. This is a fellow-only lecture provided mostly by BCM GI faculty. The summer curriculum is focused on the most common inpatient and outpatient GI consults and is delivered to the first-year fellows by faculty and senior fellows. In the fall and spring, the lecture topics rotate through a variety of high-yield GI topics. In addition, visiting professors are invited for private Q&A sessions with the fellows. These lectures are held in person.

Journal Club

Journal Club occurs monthly on a Monday evening from 5 to 6 p.m. starting in the fall. It is aimed to help fellows demonstrate the use of the principles of evidence-based medicine to critique study design and analysis of current gastrointestinal medical literature. Fellows work closely with a faculty member to prepare the live conference and written assessment of the study that is shared during the lecture. These sessions are held both virtually and in person.

Grand Rounds

The Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology hosts weekly GI grand rounds. This interdisciplinary conference is held from 8 to 9 a.m. (CST) every Thursday at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center, McNair Campus. Lectures include case presentations from fellows, wellness lectures, guest speakers and visiting professors, featuring local faculty as well as regional and national experts in their respective fields. These lectures are held in a hybrid in-person and virtual format.

Conferences

Research Conferences

Research conferences are held monthly from 5:15 to 6:15 p.m., starting in the fall. Current research projects from faculty and fellows are presented and discussed for feedback. This lecture is interactive and provides the opportunity to learn and apply concepts of research methodology from well-published faculty.

Multidisciplinary Benign GI Conference

The Multidisciplinary Benign GI Conference is held at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center every week. This is a multidisciplinary session with pathology, radiology, and gastrointestinal surgery. In this conference, interesting inpatient and outpatient cases are presented for histological and imaging correlation and to discuss surgical options. Fellows have the opportunity to present patients and partake in these multidisciplinary discussions.
