25th Annual GI & Liver Conference

March 28–29, 2026 | Virtual + In Person (Westin Medical Center)

Join Baylor College of Medicine’s Section of Gastroenterology & Hepatology for a two-day course designed to enhance clinical knowledge in gastrointestinal and liver diseases, with a focus on emerging medical therapies and evolving best practices.

The GI & Hepatology Essentials and Updates: Baylor APP Course

Feb. 21, 2026: The GI & Hepatology Essentials and Updates Course is designed for advanced practice providers and allied health professionals seeking practical, clinically focused education in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The program offers concise, high-yield updates on diagnostic strategies, therapeutic advances, and common challenges encountered in everyday GI and liver care.

Sessions will be delivered by expert faculty from the Baylor College of Medicine Section of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, and other specialists. Attendees will gain valuable insights to enhance clinical decision-making, improve patient outcomes, and stay current with emerging trends in the field. This event is eligible for Continuing Medical Education (CME) credit hours.

GI Board Review Course

Oct. 11-12, 2025: The GI Board Course will be offered both virtually and in person at Baylor Medicine, McNair Campus.

This program is designed for physicians, trainees, and allied health professionals with a clinical interest in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Participants will receive updates on the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances in GI and liver diseases, with a particular focus on emerging medical therapies.

Presentations will be delivered by distinguished faculty from the Baylor College of Medicine Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology, along with renowned experts from across the nation.

Annual GI and Hepatology Board Review Course

Board Course Date: Sept. 22-24, 2023

This course is designed for physicians, trainees and health professionals with interest or clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This course will serve as an update on the latest diagnostic and therapeutic issues in GI and Hepatology.

This program has been developed using a combination of lecture and case-based curriculum designed to serve as an intensive review tool for GI and Hepatology Board Certification/ Re-Certification Examination in 2023. View a flyer.

22nd Annual GI and Liver Course

March 25-26, 2023: This event featured clinical care innovations presented by experts from the Baylor College of Medicine Department of Medicine, Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Attendees were given insight as well as emerging medical therapies, as well as an outline of the most effective ways to integrate this information into clinical practice.

Oct. 7-9, 2022: The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Board Review Course was provided for physicians, trainees, and health professionals with an interest or clinical practice in Gastroenterology and Hepatology. This course served as an update on the latest diagnostic and therapeutic issues in GI and Hepatology.

21st Annual GI and Liver Course

March 26–27, 2022: The 21st Annual GI and Liver Course was held in a virtual format, for those wishing to learn more about the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal and liver diseases and conditions, including emerging medical therapies.

GI Research Conference 2020 - 2021

The GI Research Conference started Sept. 20, 2020 and will recur on the third Thursday of the month from 5-6 p.m. in Conference Room A at the McNair Campus.

GUT Journal Club 2021-2022

The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Journal Club occurred on the third Thursday of every month from 6-7:30 p.m. at McNair, Conference Room A. It will also include the fellow and faculty who are presenting one article for 25 minutes each.

Anorectal Disease Workshop

Dec. 11, 2021: The first-ever Anorectal Disease Workshop was directed by Dr. Waqar Qureshi, professor, Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. In addition to Dr. Qureshi, speakers included Dr. Yesenia Rojas-Khalil and Dr. Rehman Sheikh.

Endoscopy Technician Certification Program

HCC-Endoscopy Technician Certification Program

Nov. 18, 2021: The Houston Community College Health Sciences Campus inaugurated the first class of students in the newly established Endoscopy Technician Certification Program. Co-developed by Dr. Kal Patel, associate professor, Gastroenterology and Hepatology, this first-of-its-kind-in-the-nation program provides a one-year certified training program in Endoscopy Technology. The program prepares students for full-time employment as Endoscopy Technicians in GI units. The inaugural class of 13 students will receive didactic, hands-on, and clinical training throughout the Texas Medical Center. 

GI Endoscopy RN & Tech Course

Nov. 13, 2021: The Texas Interventional Endoscopy Group (TxIEG) held its 6th annual GI Endoscopy RN & Tech Course at the BSLMC McNair Endoscopy unit. The course featured Drs. Jordan Sparkman, assistant professor, Salmaan Jawaid, assistant professor, Wasif Abidi, assistant professor, Avi Ketwaroo, assistant professor, and Kal Patel, associate professor, all from the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The CNE-accredited event featured a live broadcast of advanced endoscopy techniques to a national audience of 110 GI nurses and technicians. TxIEG is a non-profit educational organization co-founded by BCM faculty Drs. Kal Patel, Mohamed Othman, and RJ Sealock to promote collaborative endoscopy education in the Texas Medical Center.

5th Annual GI Nurse and Tech Training Course

5th Annual GI Nurse and Tech Training Course

Dec. 5, 2020: The fifth annual GI Nurse and Tech Training Course was hosted by The Texas Interventional Endoscopy Group (TxIEG). The course featured Baylor GI faculty Drs. RJ Sealock, assistant professor, Mohamed Othman, associate professor, Waqar Qureshi, professor, and Kal Patel, associate professor, all from Gastroenterology and Hepatology. The course was held at the BSLMC McNair Campus Endoscopy Unit and was accredited for continuing education credits by Houston Community College. The event featured a live broadcast of endoscopy demonstrations to an online national audience of more than 200 GI nurses, technicians and professionals.

TeCH Annual Symposium 2020

Oct. 17, 2020: Texas Collaborative Center for Hepatocellular Cancer (TeCH) held its inaugural Symposium virtually. View the agenda.

Colon Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk

Nov. 16, 2019: Baylor College of Medicine. Get Your Rear in Gear - Houston helped raise awareness about colorectal cancer. Survivors, caregivers, family, friends, and the medical community came together for this Colon Cancer Awareness 5K Run/Walk to educate the community about this largely preventable cancer. Events included a timed 5K run, 5K walk and a kids’ fun run. Baylor College of Medicine's Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology hosts a table where Dr. Suneal Agarwal spoke to the importance of screening colonoscopies.

2nd Annual GI/Hepatology PrimeCare Course at DeBakey VA

MEDVAMC 2nd GI/Hepatology PrimeCare Course (320x240)

Feb. 22, 2019

The 2nd Annual GI/Hepatology PrimeCare Course was held at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) Feb. 20, 2019. The aim of the course was to provide relevant and concise updates on common GI and liver topics for the primary care staff at the MEDVAMC. The course was attended by 94 physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses. The co-directors for the course were Dr. Nisreen S. Husain and Dr. Ellie Jarbrink-Sehgal. The course planning committee included Ngoc Duong, PA and Leslie Hsu, PA. The following GI/Hepatology faculty gave lectures for the course: Dr. Nisreen S. Husain, Dr. David Graham, Dr. Ellie Jarbrink-Seghal, Dr. Rajesh Shah, Dr. Natalia Khalaf, Dr. Yamini Natarajan, Dr. Khozema Hussain, and Dr. Avi Ketwaroo. Additional guest lecturers included Dr. Cezarina Mindru (Infectious Disease) and GI nurses Aesha Jackson, Mary Alfred, and Mary Nunn.
