High School Student Summer Internship Program in Clinical Research

About the Program

Content

The program provides an immersive health professions and clinical research experience within the Baylor College of Medicine OB/GYN department. The activities include:

  • Attending lectures focused on medical research
  • Shadowing and exploring clinical research 
  • Learning about the operations and logistics of research administration
  • Participating in community health promotion programs
  • Presenting an individual health project

Program participants interact with Baylor College of Medicine faculty and staff. The clinical research leadership team serves as the program counselors who accompany the students during all of the activities.

The program is scheduled from June 24, 2024 to Aug. 5, 2024. Program participants will work in the Texas Children’s Hospital Pavilion for Women 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. on weekdays. Students will bring their own laptop and use TCH internet.

Content
  • Completing required certification training (biomedical research, health information privacy and confidentiality, good clinical practice, and other certification training in the CITI program)
  • Shadowing biobank/clinical trial research personnels in all types of research activities in the healthcare setting
  • Exploring research regulatory, administration and operations in the office setting
  • Attending the research-related departmental and institutional lectures and seminars (biostatistics, bioinformatics, clinical research, etc.)
  • Shadowing health promotion programs in the community health field
  • Presenting an individual health project in various delivery methods (pre-approved social media posts, in-person lecture in the community or healthcare setting, etc.)

Week 1

  • Research Basics/Ethics Training

Week 2-4

  • Shadowing research coordinators in outpatient and inpatient settings
  • Learning informed consent and building patient relationship
  • Exploring research regulatory, administration, operations
  • Establishing situational awareness and medical etiquette
  • Attend medical research lectures and workshops
  • Participating weekly group/ individual 1:1 mentoring meetings

Week 5-6

  • Designing and presenting individual project

The application is available to current high school students (at least 16 years or older) in the greater Houston area between March 22 - April 26, 2024.  Please complete an application

Selected candidates will have a virtual interview between April 16 and April 30, 2024. Results will be released by May 1, 2024.
