Harris Health System

1504 Taub Loop Houston, TX 77030
713-873-2000
Ben Taub Hospital.

Harris Health System is the public healthcare system providing primary, specialty and hospital care to the residents of Harris County, Texas, the third most populous county in the United States with a population of nearly four million people.

Baylor College of Medicine faculty and residents staff 7 of the 13 community health centers in Harris Health as well as Ben Taub Hospital and Quentin Mease Community Hospital.

Ben Taub Hospital

Healthcare

As the largest hospital in the Harris Health System, Ben Taub provides an impressive range of services, from outpatient general medicine and pediatric clinics, to the most complicated surgical procedures. U.S. military personnel from the Air Force, Army and Navy have used Ben Taub Hospital to train their surgeons in advanced trauma care.

Education

Ben Taub Hospital, the central clinical care facility of the Harris Health System, serves as a teaching hospital for all specialties and their subspecialties. The hospital's chief of staff and the chiefs of every medical and surgical service are full-time Baylor faculty members. Teaching rounds and conferences are held regularly.

Medical students and house staff care for patients in Ben Taub’s busy Level I trauma center, which serves patients from greater Houston needing emergency care with ailments and injuries involving all the specialties and subspecialties of surgery, medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatry. Baylor students and house staff also do rotations on Ben Taub’s inpatient services for general medicine and subspecialties, surgery and subspecialties, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, as well as the following intensive care units: medicine, trauma/surgery, pediatric, neurological, neonatal and critical wound care.

Physician assistant students train at Ben Taub for surgery, emergency medicine, inpatient pediatrics, and other specialties and subspecialties. Students in the nurse anesthesia program participate in all aspects of anesthesia care at Ben Taub, including care for trauma patients in the emergency department and in the operating rooms as well as obstetrics.

Research

Ben Taub attracts an incredibly diverse patient population, making it a superb center for clinical research.

Thomas Street at Quentin Mease Health Center

Thomas Street at Quentin Mease was the first free-standing HIV/AIDS treatment facility in the country. A quarter of all Harris County residents receiving treatment for HIV/AIDS are treated here. This is equivalent to one to two percent of all people in the U.S. in treatment for HIV/AIDS.

Located at 3601 North MacGregor Way, it is staffed by faculty and residents of both Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Medical students and residents occasionally have rotations at TSHC. All infectious disease fellows have clinic at TSHC.

Quentin Mease Hospital

Quentin Mease Hospital is a 49-bed hospital located five miles east of the Texas Medical Center. Faculty, residents and fellows of Baylor staff this hospital. The hospital comprises a Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF)-accredited physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) program and a 24-bed geriatric skilled nursing program. Baylor physical medicine and rehabilitation and geriatric trainees see patients at this facility.

Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital

Lyndon B. Johnson Hospital is an acute care facility verified as a Level 3 trauma center. This trauma center is only one of nine in the greater Houston area serving the needs of Northeast Harris County. This hospital offers general medical and surgical services for the Harris Health System. Faculty, residents and fellows of Baylor provide care at this hospital.
