Emergency Medicine Medical Education Fellowship


About the Program


The Emergency Medicine Medical Education Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine is a new one- to two-year advanced training program in medical education sponsored by the Department of Emergency Medicine. Designed for Emergency Medicine residency graduates, this program provides the foundation for a career in academic medicine focused on education, strong mentorship, and experiences in graduate medical education, undergraduate medical education, simulation, and faculty development. Fellows pursuing a two-year track will also complete a supported Maters in Education at the University of Houston.

Professional Development

Dedicated, personalized faculty development

The fellow meets regularly with our associate director for faculty development, as well as the fellowship director, to review career goals and identify growth opportunities.

Nationally recognized institution-wide faculty development program

Baylor College of Medicine has an outstanding, nationally recognized faculty development program that regularly offers training sessions for faculty. The fellow has the opportunity to take courses of their choice, as well as teach several courses alongside the educational faculty.

Baylor also has a nationally recognized educational excellence academy. This academy was the basis for the CORD Academy for Scholarship “Distinguished Educator” Awards.

Potential for Masters in Education

Those fellows choosing the two year option are enrolled and supported to complete a Masters in Education in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Houston.

ACEP teaching fellowship

Fellows are funded to participate in the ACEP teaching fellowship.


The fellow participates in regular teaching including residents, medical students, physician assistant students, EMS students, and faculty. The fellow is also scheduled for regular teaching shifts during their training.


Training is available for fellows in research theory and methods. Available resources that can be utilized in completion of a research project include:

Health, Humanism, and Society Scholars Program

This program identifies students who are interested in educational research in the medical sciences and pairs them with a Baylor faculty.

Medical student research elective

This is an elective through Baylor that offers students credit for participating in a formal research course while helping faculty with their research as needed.

Physician assistant student research projects

As part of their graduation requirements, PA students are required to complete a research project of their choice with a Baylor faculty member. The Department of Emergency Medicine has created a pipeline within this program to regularly work with PA students on educational research projects.


Fellows receive a faculty appointment and are eligible for full time benefits as faculty. Fellows work 20 hrs/week clinically at our training sites.


Fellows serve on program’s clinical competency committee, assist the PD and APDs on residency administration and curriculum development, and assist with the clerkship and assistant clerkship director on medical student teaching and course administration.

Educational Project

Fellows are expected to complete a project of publishable quality in one of the following areas:

  • Programmatic Evaluation
  • Curricular Design and Innovation
  • Educational Research
