Drs. Shen and LeMaire Awarded NHLBI R01 Grant
Hu Ying Shen, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of surgery, and Scott A. LeMaire, M.D., professor of surgery and vice-chair for research, received a four-year $1.58M grant from the NIH National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) for their project, “The Mitochondrial Damage-Induced Necroptotic Cell Death in Sporadic Ascending Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms and Dissections.” The proposed study will determine the role of programmed necrotic cell death and mitochondrial damage in sporadic ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections.
Dr. LeMaire and Dr. Shen are NIH- and AHA-funded investigators and architects of a successful cardiovascular research program at Baylor College of Medicine. One of the core missions of their program is research training and education. Their lab pursues investigations into the causes and progression of aortic disease and maintains one of the world’s most extensive and well-cataloged aortic tissue banks.
