Hu Ying Shen, M.D., Ph.D. and Scott A. LeMaire, M.D., were awarded an NIH, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute R01 grant for the study “Targeting ER stress to Treat Aortic Aneurysms and Dissections.”
Dr. Shen is an associate professor of surgery and directs the Cardiothoracic Surgery Research Laboratory in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
Dr. LeMaire is a professor of surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and vice-chair for research in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine.
In the laboratory, co-investigators Dr. Shen and Dr. LeMaire, focus their basic science research on the role of various aspects of extracellular matrix metabolism in the development of aortic aneurysms and dissections. In particular, their group is studying the roles of destructive factors, such as inflammatory cells and proteases, as well as reparative mechanisms, such as stem cell recruitment and transformation, during the development of aortic aneurysms and dissections.
