Mary L. Brandt, M.D., professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine, will serve as the Hirikati Nagaraj, M.D. Visiting Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Louisville/Norton Children’s Hospital on Feb. 22. She will speak on “Diagnosing and Treating Burnout: A New Model for Sustaining a Career in Surgery.”

Dr. Brandt is not only a renowned pediatric surgeon, but also a dedicated educator and recipient of numerous teaching awards. She has held multiple leadership roles in pediatric surgery including serving as chair of the Section of Surgery of the American Academy of Pediatrics and on the Pediatric Surgery Board of the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Brandt is board certified in Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care and treats a wide variety of surgical problems in newborns and children. Although the majority of her practice is devoted to common conditions such as appendicitis, reflux disease, and hernias, she also has specific expertise in bariatric surgery for morbidly obese adolescents, newborn surgical anomalies, anorectal malformations, Hirschsprung disease, and congenital biliary tract disease.

She is the primary Baylor investigator for several NIH multi-center research grants focusing on adolescent bariatric surgery as a treatment modality for morbid obesity. She has published widely including 215 articles and numerous chapters.
