Nader Zamani, M.D., general surgery resident, received the award for Best Overall Abstract Presentation at the Association of VA Surgeons (AVAS) 2019 Annual Meeting.

The abstract titled, “Influence of Cardiovascular Disease and Chronic Kidney Disease on Long-Term Mortality following Major Operations in a National Cohort of Veterans,” aimed to characterize the impact of cardiovascular disease and chronic kidney disease on outcomes following high-risk operations. Researchers found that the interaction between the two disease processes confers substantially greater risk of adverse events than they do individually, an observation that contributes to the pre- and post-operative decision-making algorithm and allows for improved patient counseling.

Co-authors of the abstract are Sherene Sharath, Ph.D., M.P.H., instructor in surgery in the Division of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy and National Study Coordinator for the TOP Trial (CSP #599) at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, and Dr. Zamani’s research mentor Panagiotis Kougias, M.D., M.Sc., associate professor and associate chief in the Division of Vascular Surgery & Endovascular Therapy at Baylor and chief of the Section of Vascular Surgery at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center.
