Professional Statement

Dr. Panos Kougias is a board-certified vascular surgeon specializing in all aspects of vascular treatment of arterial and venous disorders.

Dr. Kougias has a strong interest in clinical and health services research and has multiple active protocols supported by peer reviewed and industry funding. He is the National PI of the TOP trial. This is study funded by the VHA Cooperative Studies Program that will investigate the effect of two transfusion strategies (transfusion triggers at 7 vs. 10 gm/dl) in patients at high risk for postoperative cardiac events. He is also investigating the effect of carotid endarterectomy and stenting on cognitive function and associated intracerebral hemodynamics. In addition, he has developed a data-driven model that has been shown in a randomized controlled trial to predict the duration of a vascular surgical interventions, and improve Operating Room productivity and personnel satisfaction.

Dr. Kougias has contributed more than 100 articles to scholarly and professional journals, such as New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Surgery, Journal of Surgical Research, Atherosclerosis, Journal of Endovascular Therapy, and Journal of Vascular Surgery. He has authored or co-authored more than 10 book chapters.

Dr. Kougias is committed to providing superior care to patients with vascular disease and preparing the next generation of surgeons to meet the highest standards of excellence. This vision is based on a dedication to advance research using the evolving technology and to improve treatment outcomes. His primary clinical interest is the repair of complex aortic aneurysms using fenestrated or branched endograft technology
