Baylor College of Medicine’s top educational leaders were honored at the annual Faculty Awards Day, held this past week at the Texas Medical Center campus.

“Today, we honor our outstanding clinicians and educators, as well as faculty whose service impacts the Baylor community and beyond,” said Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, senior dean of faculty and presenter for Faculty Awards Day.

Presidential Awards
Established in 1999, the Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education recognizes faculty members who have made long-standing, consistent and highly valued contributions to the educational mission of the College. Recipients become members of the Baylor Society of Presidential Educators and receive $10,000 and a crystal award.

The 2024 recipients of the Robertson Presidential Award are Dr. Sandra Haudek, associate professor of medicine, and Dr. Daryl A. Scott, professor of molecular and human genetics. Corby Robertson of the Robertson family joined the Baylor community to present this award.

McGovern Awards
The John P. McGovern Outstanding Teaching Awards were established in 1986 and are determined by second-, third- and fourth-year medical students and based on outstanding teaching of preclinical, or foundational, and clinical medical school curriculum. The nominees are approved by the Faculty Awards Committee.

The 2024 recipients of the McGovern Teaching Awards are Dr. Atul Maheshwari, associate professor of neurology, and Dr. Andrew Caruso, associate professor of medicine.

Clark Faculty Service Award
Established in 2017, the award honors faculty members whose exemplary service with professionalism has not previously been recognized through an official award by the College. Recipients represent their professions and Baylor’s mission, vision and values at the highest level and have made significant, enduring contributions to the College.

Recipients for 2024 are Dr. Claire E. Bocchini, assistant professor of pediatrics; Dr. Seema R. Lalani, professor of molecular and human genetics; Dr. Phuong T. Nguyen, associate professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences; Dr. Regina Okhuysen-Cawley, associate professor of pediatrics; and Dr. Eric Storch, professor and vice chair of psychology in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences.

Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards
The Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards provide an opportunity for Baylor faculty who meet designated standards of quality, quantity and breadth to receive recognition for their sustained exemplary educational contributions across all areas of the College. They were presented this year in four categories: teaching and evaluation, educational leadership, educational research and the development of enduring educational materials.

Also recognized were faculty who were appointed to endowed chairs and professorships: 

Dr. Gail Eckhardt, associate dean for experimental therapeutics and associate director for translational research at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, The Albert and Margaret Alkek Foundation Endowed Chair; Dr. Xi Chen, adjunct associate professor of molecular and cellular biology, Cullen Duncan McAshan Endowed Professorship in Cancer Research; Dr. Cintia de Pavia, professor of ophthalmology, Carolyn F. Elles Professorship; Dr. Douglas R. Dirschl, chair and professor of orthopedic surgery, Wilhelmina Barnhart Chair of Orthopedic Surgery; Dr. Ben Frankfort, professor of ophthalmology, Clifton R. McMichael Chair in Ophthalmology; Dr. David Green, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery, Benjamin Ford Kitchen Professorship in Orthopedics; Dr. William Y. Huang, professor of family and community medicine, William W. O’Donnell, M.D., and Regina O’Donnell Chair in Family Medicine; Dr. Michael Y. Lee, chair and professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation, Martin S. Adams Endowed Chair; Dr. Thomas E. Lloyd, chair and professor of neurology, Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair IV; Dr. Mary Majudmer, professor of medicine in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Dalton Tomlin Chair in Medical Ethics and Health Policy; Dr. Paul Pfaffinger, chair and professor of neuroscience, Wilhelmina Robertson Distinguished Chair in Neuroscience; Dr. Pavan Reddy, professor and director of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, The John M. O’Quinn Foundation Chair in Cancer; Dr. Sanjiv R. Sur, professor of medicine, Nancy Chang, Ph.D., Endowed Chair for The Biology of Inflammation Center (II); Dr. Alex Sweeney, associate professor of otolaryngology, The Brown Foundation Endowed Professorship in Otolaryngology.
