About the Lab
The Kevin Erickson Lab focuses on health economics, policy and outcomes in kidney disease. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and private organizations. Recently, Erickson studied the effects of nephrologist reimbursement policy, dialysis facility market competition, and dialysis modality choices on health care costs, outcomes and access to care.
In addition to his research, Erickson is a practicing nephrologist at Baylor College of Medicine and a former member of the American Society of Nephrology Quality Committee. After majoring in economics at Amherst College, he studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and trained in internal medicine at Emory University and nephrology at Stanford University.

Lab Projects
Physician payment policy in dialysis
Funding: AHRQ
I have examined the effects of a tiered fee-for-service payment policy for nephrologists caring for patients receiving hemodialysis in the United States
Market Competition in Hemodialysis
Funding: NIDDK
I have examined the effects of dialysis provider market competition on the quality of care delivered, patient health outcomes, and innovation.
Dialysis facility closures
Funding: American Society of Nephrology
I have examined the effects of dialysis facility closures on patient health outcomes and distances traveled to receive hemodialysis.
Technology assessment
I have examined the cost-effectiveness of interventions to manage chronic kidney disease, including the use of statins for primary cardiovascular prevention, novel therapies for ADPKD, and tolerance induction in kidney transplantation.
Employment in patients with kidney disease
Funding: National Kidney Foundation
I have examined challenges that patients with kidney disease face when trying to maintain employment as their kidney disease becomes more severe.
Comparing cost of home dialysis
Funding: Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas
I have compared the cost of in-center hemodialysis to peritoneal dialysis among patients with Medicare coverage and those with private health insurance.
