About the Lab
Dr. Sheikh-Hamad’s research focuses on acute kidney injury (AKI) and transition to chronic kidney disease (CKD). The reasons for AKI are numerous, but the most common is ischemic kidney injury which occurs frequently after surgery involving major blood vessels or admission to the ICU for a variety of reasons. To simulate ischemic kidney injury in experimental animals, we clamp the renal pedicle (arteries and veins) for predetermined periods and examine kidney outcomes after genetic manipulations to alter the expression of proteins of interest. Moreover, AKI often advances to CKD; therefore, understanding pathways that contribute to this transition is important. Hence our focus on those areas as well.
