Baylor College of Medicine honored outstanding alumni and faculty at the 2021 Alumni Awards Ceremony, held virtually on April 14.

Dr. Major Bradshaw received the Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his career dedicated to medicine and medical education, at home and abroad. A graduate of Baylor College of Medicine, Bradshaw completed training at Johns Hopkins and the National Institutes of Health before returning to Baylor, where he held progressive leadership roles in education while maintaining a practice in infectious diseases. In 2006, Bradshaw became the founding dean of the University of Botswana School of Medicine, a partnership with Baylor. In this role, he was influential in the efforts to stop the “brain drain” of bright young physicians leaving Africa for medical careers elsewhere.

At the ceremony, Bradshaw reflected on the first time he walked the halls of Baylor College of Medicine, 60 years ago.

“The main thing I remember is the outstanding faculty that cared about each one of us and knew each one of us,” Bradshaw said. “The other really striking thing was the number of opportunities we had for hands-on patient care, and that has guided all the efforts I've made in education and having students really be involved in the patient’s care, because that’s what I had at Baylor.”

Alumni Awards are presented annually to honor career accomplishments in the areas of innovative research, outstanding patient care and excellence in teaching.

“Congratulations to all our honorees on behalf of Baylor College of Medicine. I want to thank our alumni and faculty for the outstanding work that you do for us and your communities every day,” said Dr. Paul Klotman, president, CEO and executive dean of Baylor College of Medicine.
