General Surgery Resident Wins STSA Brooks Scholarship

Dr. Rodrigo Zea Vera, general surgery resident in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, was awarded the STSA (Southern Thoracic Surgery Association) Brooks Scholarship.
In addition to receiving recognition at this year's meeting, Dr. Zea Vera will give two oral presentations. Dr. Zea Vera's mentor is Dr. Ravi Ghanta, associate professor of surgery at Baylor and chief of Cardiac Surgery at Ben Taub Hospital.
"I deeply appreciate the opportunity to present my research and represent Baylor College of Medicine at this esteemed meeting. I would also like to acknowledge Dr. Ghanta's mentorship and sponsorship that made it possible for me to get this scholarship," he said. The 2019 STSA meeting will be Nov. 6-9, 2019 in Marco Island, Fla.
The STSA James W. Brooks Resident Scholarship seeks to identify and encourage general surgery residents, who are committed to pursuing a career in cardiothoracic surgery, to travel to the STSA Annual Meeting. Dr. Jim Brooks was the 23rd President of the STSA and a life-time supporter of the association.
