Harvey-Related Chemical Fire (HCF) study

The Wheeler et al. v. Arkema, Inc., Civil Action settlement is the rationale/reason for the conduct of this study. Our study team refer to the study as the "Harvey-related Chemical Fire (HCF)" study. The objective of the HCF study is to conduct surveys and environmental sampling to assess potential exposure to fire-related chemicals and their impact on the health and well-being of individuals who lived within the City of Crosby and its environment for a minimum of one year between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2022. The study focuses on the location of the Arkema plant in Crosby, Texas, the site of the industrial fire which occurred in September 2017.

The overall goal of this study is to examine the potential long-term impact of exposure to fire-related chemicals on self-reported health outcomes of individuals who lived within the City of Crosby and its environment during the study period. To achieve the goal of the study, we will:

• Identify a cohort of individuals who lived within the City of Crosby and its environment for a minimum of one year between July 1, 2017 and June 30, 2022.
• Conduct surveys of the identified study population to ascertain chronic respiratory disease diagnoses and cancer-related outcomes. 
• Measure the concentration of environmental pollutants within the study area by: 
  • Retrieving historical data on chemical pollutants government/authoritative/proprietary sources (e.g., U.S. Environmental Protection Agency)
  • Collecting environmental samples from random sampling sites within the study area. 
• Assess whether incidence of cancer and chronic respiratory diseases increase by environmental exposure gradient.
