Energy and Screen Study: Energy Expenditure of young Children's Sedentary Behaviors, the Energy and Screen Study (H-56253)

Description

Content

Description

We are measuring the energy that children use during quiet activities such as watching TV, playing video games, listening to audiobooks and coloring.

Your child does not need to use screens on a regular basis to be part of this study.

Why is this important?

Understanding how screen use and sleep patterns affect energy expenditure during quiet activities helps us determine their impact on children's overall energy balance and weight.

Purpose and Goals

We aim to directly measure children's screen media use and sleep, and examine how these relate to their energy use during sedentary activities.

Duration

Your participation is required for 7 to 10 days, which includes:

  • One home visit to measure screen time and sleep (up to 2.5 hours visit)
  • One center visit where we will measure your child’s energy use and body composition while they do a variety of activities.
  • Up to 6 hours at the center visit

Eligibility

We are looking for children aged 3 to 5 years and their parents living in the greater Houston area who are willing to participate in one home visit and one center visit.

Compensation

Participants will receive up to $160, a lunch during the center visit and free parking and giveaway.
