If you use direct rewards, your child will earn a reward for each activity or homework that they do. Here are some steps to follow when using this approach:
- Decide what behaviors (LUNA activities, practice, and homework) will earn rewards, and make sure it is within what your child can do. For example, it would not be appropriate to ask a child to practice a new challenging skill by themselves if they are not yet able to do it without your support. Consider what your child can do and use that to define what will earn a reward. Over time, as your child’s ability increases, you can increase the expectations for what earns a reward.
- Decide what reward will be earned for the behavior(s). Remember to consider the guidelines in previous pages – that the reward(s) should be meaningful to the child and match the activity and effort required.
- Make a rewards list. Take some time to think about the rewards that your child could earn throughout LUNA. You will be making a rewards list with your child, but it may be helpful to jot down some ideas before sitting down with them.
