FAQ for for Social Gathering Off-Campus with Students

What will we be doing?
After your long interview day, you will be able to relax and socialize with current M.D./Ph.D. students over dinner and drinks at nearby student hangouts. This is a great opportunity to see what student life is like in Houston. It’s also a chance for you to get to know our students and ask any questions about the program in a casual setting with no faculty present.

Where is it?
Our students pick various local venues to show you the fun places where they kick back and relax after a day in the clinic or lab. Houston is a vibrant young city with lots of great dining, bars, and music.

Who’s going to be there?
You’ll have the opportunity to hang with current students from various stages of the MD/PhD program who have an array of research and personal interests.

Can I change beforehand?
You are welcome to bring along a change of clothes for after the interview day. Many applicants choose to change into something a little more comfortable for the social. However, please keep in mind that you won’t be returning to your host’s home before dinner, so you’ll have to bring these clothes with you at the beginning of the interview day.

How do I get there?
We will provide transportation from Baylor College of Medicine to the location of the social, so just sit back and relax!

How long does it last?
Dinner will last approximately an hour. If you want to go home after dinner, that’s fine. However, we’d love for you to stick around and enjoy the nightlife in Houston!

How will I get home afterwards?
We will also provide transportation from the social back to your host’s house. We will have drivers ready to leave whenever you are ready, just let us know when you’re starting to get tired!

What if I’m not 21 years old?
For dinner, we choose restaurants that have no age restrictions; however, the National Minimum Drinking Age Act of 1984 says you can’t consume alcohol. For the post dinner social, we make every effort to choose locations that allow those under 21 on the premises, but it is always at the venue's discretion.

What if I don’t drink?
Come out for the food and company! Plenty of current students who also don’t drink often choose to come as well.

What if I have specific dietary restrictions?
We have your information and will order food accordingly. If you have concerns, feel free to contact us.

What if I am not able to attend?
We will be sad :( But we understand if you have other commitments, early flights, etc. Your attendance will in no way affect your application to Baylor College of Medicine.

Tip: Medical school tours are extensive with considerable walking. Plan to dress comfortably after interviews or bring comfortable shoes.
