Association of Women Surgeons - Student Chapter

Item Definition

The Association of Women Surgeons is a national organization committed to empowering female surgeons at every stage of their careers. The Baylor College of Medicine chapter of AWS provides resources to support, educate and inspire female medical students interested in pursuing a career in surgery. Our organization works closely with Baylor residents and attending physicians, providing unique networking and mentorship opportunities and serves as a forum for open discussion on topics related to professional development and challenges unique to women in surgery.

Anesthesiology Interest Group

Item Definition

The Anesthesiology Interest Group (formerly the Crawford Long Society) is a student-run organization that aims to expose medical students to anesthesiology. We help set up shadowing, volunteer and research opportunities for students and have several events every term where one can learn and interact with peers, residents and attendings. Additionally, we have speaker events and skills labs to better prepare students as they pursue careers in the field of anesthesia.

Dermatology Interest Group

Item Definition

The Dermatology Interest Group's purpose is to increase awareness of dermatology and dermatological issues within the medical student body and the community at large. We foster relationships between faculty mentors, residents, and medical students to increase exposure to research and involvement in the rewarding field of dermatology. Membership is open to all Baylor College of Medicine students interested in adult and pediatric dermatology.

  • Dermatology In Skin of Color Organization is a subgroup within DIG that focuses on equity in skin pathology education and mentorship for students underrepresented in medicine who are interested in dermatology. Contact DIG leaders for more information.

Item Definition

The Emergency Medicine Interest Group is an organization that aims to provide resources to students who are interested in emergency medicine or other critical care specialties. We host lecturers from emergency medicine faculty, organize monthly skills workshops, organize ACLS/BLS classes, and work with emergency medicine faculty to provide mentorship and research opportunities for our members!

ENTerest - Otolaryngology Interest Group

Item Definition

Are you ENTerested in ENT? This is the perfect organization for you to explore! ENT stands for Ear, Nose, Throat which refers to the specialized field of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery. ENTerest group aims to bring together medical students who share a passion for head & neck anatomy as well as a desire for a career blending both surgery and medicine. This is our platform to build a network with colleagues, residents and faculty for volunteering, shadowing, research opportunities and much more! The ENTerest Group's main goals are to teach medical students about otolaryngology as a specialty and to provide resources and hands-on experiences to students who wish to pursue a residency in otolaryngology. We offer the following opportunities and services:

  • Host lectures with speakers from the Baylor otolaryngology department
  • Organize workshops that teach students skills relevant to otolaryngology, such as flexible laryngoscopy
  • Provide students with the communication channels to become more involved in various otolaryngology activities

Item Definition

The Family Medicine Interest Group strives to unite students interested in family medicine and primary care, provide service and research opportunities to students. The FMIG also collaborates with local family medicine physicians and practices to teach medical students about the specialty.

The Genetics Interest Group was established to promote awareness of the field of Genetics and Genomics and its application to clinical medicine, research and public health and policy. Item Definition

The Gynecology and Obstetrics Interest Group at Baylor College of Medicine exists to:

  • Promote interest in the Ob-Gyn profession among medical students and to facilitate entry into the profession
  • Foster connections between Ob-Gyn faculty/trainees and medical student
  • Educate and serve the community in regard to women’s health

Infectious Disease Interest Group

Item Definition

The goal of the Infectious Disease Interest Group is to promote the field of infectious disease to the students of Baylor College of Medicine through learning opportunities and mentorship with the goal of advancing the next generation of infectious disease physicians. The group organizes a bimonthly lecture series throughout the year with topics including residency and career planning, emerging issues in the field and infectious disease high-yield review sessions. The group promotes numerous learning opportunities in infectious disease within the Texas Medical Center, including the weekly Citywide Infectious Disease Conference and the weekly Infectious Diseases Journal Club. The Infectious Disease Interest Group aims to provide one-on-one mentorship with Section of Infectious Disease faculty members to students who wish to pursue a career in infectious disease.

Item Definition

The Medicine-Pediatrics Interest Group aims to support students interested in training in combined internal medicine/pediatrics and to foster interest in all aspects of the field. MPIG club activities involve community service (Pal's Place, Special Olympics), exploration of research opportunities, journal club, lecture series and collaboration with Baylor Med-Peds residents.

Student Interest Group in Neurology

Item Definition

The Student Interest Group in Neurology is a chapter of the American Academy of Neurology, whose purpose is to increase knowledge and foster interest in Neurology by providing opportunities to participate in clinical, research and service activities in Neurology. SIGN offers research and shadowing opportunities, mentorship including a residency workshop and regular talks on various topics in Neurology. Within the larger Baylor College of Medicine community, SIGN aims to provide a venue for medical students to interact with faculty members and residents through social and educational events to develop valuable contacts and relationships that will help support students’ educational goals. SIGN also provides free AAN/ANA membership, free registration to the AAN Annual Meeting and various scholarship opportunities.

Orthopedic Surgery Society

Item Definition

Also known as BOSS, the Orthopedic Surgery Society is a student organization at Baylor College of Medicine to support students with an interest Orthopedic Surgery. The group aims to provide information about the field, offer basic clinical skills training and serve as a liaison between students and faculty with regards to both clinical and academic opportunities. BOSS meetings include faculty lectures amongst the various subspecialties in orthopedics, joint injection and physical exam workshops, mixers with upperclassmen going into orthopedics, interaction with statewide and national Orthopedic organizations and collaborative initiatives for women entering the field.

Pathology Interest Group

Item Definition

The Pathology Interest Group at Baylor College of Medicine was created to foster interest in and to provide students with opportunities to explore the field of pathology. We work towards this by hosting informational sessions as well as hands-on events such as a frozen section workshop and a fine needle aspiration workshop. PIG’s events may be informational, immersive, and in some cases, both. These events allow medical students to meet and interact with physicians and residents at all levels and in many subspecialties, as well as gain a deeper understanding of the pathology learned in the classroom and on the wards.

Item Definition

The purpose and goals of the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Interest Group are to:

  • Provide the Baylor undergraduate community with a warm atmosphere and avenue for anyone interested in learning more about physical medicine and rehabilitation
  • Provide information regarding PM&R history and learning opportunities, including clinical and research prospects
  • Provide a means for medical students to attend meetings with speakers and attend various skills workshops

PsychMinded is a student-run psychiatry interest group. One important goal of PsychMinded is to increase interest and appreciation of psychiatry. The Radiology Interest Group at Baylor College of Medicine is dedicated to fostering interest in both interventional radiology and diagnostic radiology within the medical student body by providing guidance to medical students through mentorship and opportunities for pre-clinical and clinical growth via various educational sessions.
