Stories from the Heart of Medicine
Theme: Trust and Mistrust
- Location: Rice University, Houston, Texas
- Time/Date: 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 13, 2025
Who can you trust? In a time when dueling views clash on social media and some once-revered institutions have lost their sheen of respectability, where do you place your trust? Where does belief go when truth becomes a mirage? Who, or what, do you believe in, and why?
Write about a time when belief turned to skepticism or mistrust turned to trust. Or write about a time when trust was intentionally broken and the consequences of doing so. Your story can be fictional or true, but it should engage deeply in trust, mistrust, distrust, and the ways in which they shape our lives.
The setting can be clinical or far from health care. Pack your story with engaging characters, realistic dialogue, and vivid scenes. Give us dramatic action! Please submit your story (600-900 words) by Sept. 28.
If selected, we'll invite you to read your story during a free one-hour story telling event on Nov. 13 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. Anyone can submit a story. If yours is accepted, you will join fellow storytellers on Oct. 20 or 21 for a workshop led by an experienced writer.
