The Baylor College of Medicine Emergency Medical Services Fellowship is currently accepting applications for our one-year fellowship program. The fellowship objectives are based on the American Board of Emergency Medicine’s requirements for board certified EMS fellowships.

We are in the process of applying for accreditation for board certification, but all of our graduates are currently able to obtain board certification through the fellowship and practice certification pathway. Our fellowship offers medical direction responsibilities through several local EMS agencies. Our faculty are local and national leaders in EMS.

The fellowship provides advanced education in emergency medical services.

  • Weekly EMS fellowship didactics taught by local EMS physicians and Baylor EMS faculty.
  • Opportunities to participate in medical direction administration and clinical practice through your choosing of a variety of busy, large, local EMS agencies.
  • CME funding to participate in several State level and national EMS and Emergency Medicine conferences.
  • Free participation in a nationally renowned Tactical Medicine Course- Cypress Creek EMS’ Basic Tactical Operational Support Course.
  • Opportunities to participate in regional and State level disaster training and mass casualty incident drills.

The fellow assumes a leadership role in EMS education within the emergency department and residency.

  • Lectures to the residency during our annual EMS didactics month
  • Lectures to local EMT students through local EMT training schools
  • Lectures to local EMS agency EMT’s
  • Lead quarterly multi-agency EMS journal clubs

The fellow is expected to complete one publishable original research project during his/her year of fellowship.

Content

A longitudinal experience providing the fellow with the skills necessary to direct an Emergency Medical Services System.

  • The fellow is expected to complete two quality improvement projects throughout his/her year of fellowship.
  • The fellow will serve as the assistant medical director for their choice of a busy local EMS agency where they will participate actively in quality improvement, credentialing and education of their agency’s EMTs.
  • The fellow will have the opportunity to take part in protocol design and revision while they serve as assistant medical director in a state that allows for a great deal of flexibility and freedom in medical director protocol design.
