May Ameri, M.D.

Hometown: Houston, TX
Undergraduate: University of Houston, Houston, TX
Medical School: UT Houston McGovern Medical School, Houston, Texas
Why Baylor: I chose Baylor because it offered some of the best training in the country right in my hometown of Houston! The sheer volume and clinical and surgical training at Baylor are second to none. The program’s culture of hard work and supervised autonomy fit my personal learning style, and it was a place where I could picture myself improving and eventually thriving as a clinician and surgeon. My motto during interviews was, “I want a place where I can work hard and learn lots, but feel comfortable and happy to go to work everyday,” and Baylor fit that description!
Outside interests:Traveling, reading, creative writing, trying new restaurants and local coffee shops, exploring the local art scene, hiking, Pilates, and cycling

Nicole Carrabba, M.D.

Hometown: Houston, Texas
Undergraduate: The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, Texas
Medical School: UT Houston McGovern Medical School, Houston, Texas
Why Baylor: Choosing Baylor was a no-brainer. Located in one of the largest medical centers in the world and in one of the most diverse cities in the U.S., Baylor offers unique clinical and surgical experiences. I knew this rigorous program would train me exceptionally well and prepare me to handle any clinical situation that may come my way. Baylor offers both the volume necessary to master recognition of common disease presentations and the exposure required to learn to identify rare ocular diseases. Moreover, the strong relationships between Baylor residents and faculty are at the heart of its robust learning environment. Finally, I love serving and caring for fellow Houstonians!
Outside interests:  Scuba diving, trekking, making homemade pasta, playing sports (basketball, swimming, tennis, softball), and traveling.

Aashka Damani, M.D.

Hometown: Seattle, WA
Undergraduate:  University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA
Medical School: University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Why Baylor: I was looking for a program that would expose me to a broad range of challenging clinical and surgical situations so I would be well-prepared for life after residency. At Baylor I found diverse clinical environments, a breadth of pathology, outstanding surgical volume and a close-knit community of mentors and colleagues that would push me to be my best. Living in the large city of Houston with its music scene, beautiful museums and expansive parks makes days off great too
Outside Interests: Hiking, pickleball, board games, tennis, reading, traveling, skiing

Sean Drummond, M.D.

Hometown: Birmingham, AL
Undergraduate: University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL
Medical School: University of Alabama at Birmingham Marnix E. Heersink School of Medicine, Birmingham, AL
Why Baylor: During my interview, it was clear that Baylor was the perfect combination of clinical experience and faculty support. The breadth of both pathology and patients served within the Texas Medical Center ensures trainees here graduate capable of offering the best visual care for common and complex cases. The support from renowned faculty affords opportunities in research and professional development essential to beginning a career in such an innovative field. Here, I am confident I will be challenged and supported throughout my residency training, all while working in the close-knit culture that naturally resides within this program!
Outside Interests: Distance running, piano, cycling, paddle boarding, baking

Karim Kozhaya, M.D.

Hometown: Beirut, Lebanon
Undergraduate: American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon
Medical School: American University of Beirut, Beirut, Lebanon
Why Baylor: During my research fellowship, I’ve experienced firsthand the supportive culture and innovative spirit that define Baylor. The department is home to some of my biggest role models and offers stellar training across all sub-specialties and unrivaled research opportunities. I’m excited to start this journey with such an exceptional group.
Outside Interests: Working out, traveling, exploring Houston’s culinary scene with friends.

Beau Sylvester, M.D.

Hometown: Kailua, HI
Undergraduate: University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA
Medical School: Washington University, St. Louis, MO
Why Baylor:  I came to Baylor as a visiting medical student and fell in love with the program for its hardworking culture, strong mentorship, and superb clinical experience. I felt confident that I would emerge from training here on a solid footing to practice independently immediately afterward. I enjoyed my time in Houston, as well, especially going for evening runs at Buffalo Bayou to make room for the properly-hyped food you will certainly hear boasted of.
Outside Interests: Running, hiking, hunting and fishing, golf, snowboarding, spending time with family.
