Mentorship is a vital part of residency education and occurs organically in our program through daily interactions with our upper level residents, core teaching faculty, research advisers, and program directors. However, given the importance of these career-defining relationships, we have also created a formal mentorship program that links each new resident with a faculty mentor who can provide additional and relevant perspectives on residency challenges, fellowship choice, job search, career-mapping, and life in general. Mentors facilitate the acquisition of skills and knowledge necessary to ensure success in our program and future career. Residents are encouraged to choose a mentor based on their prior experiences, personal or professional interests, and/or subspecialty pathways.
Residents are evaluated by multiple faculty members on each rotation. Evaluations are based on the core competencies of patient care, medical knowledge, systems-based practice, practice-based learning and improvement, professionalism, and interpersonal and communication skills. Evaluations are electronically gathered and released to the residents after they complete each rotation. Informal mid-rotation evaluations are also encouraged.
Residents are also afforded the opportunity to anonymously evaluate faculty members following completion of each rotation. They are also given the opportunity to evaluate each lecture and provide feedback on what they believe works well and what needs improvement. All evaluations are delivered electronically. A given faculty member must accumulate at least six evaluations before the results are released for their review. The released evaluations are blinded with respect to the time period that they cover, further ensuring their anonymous nature. Candor in the evaluation process is encouraged and appreciated.
