An important component of resident education is the active involvement in educating other residents, medical students and colleagues. A number of opportunities allow residents to not only teach, but also to learn how to become effective clinician educators through a variety of on-site seminars. Principal teaching opportunities include leading daily rounds under attending supervision. This allows the resident to educate rotating pediatric and adult neurology residents as well as medical students on how to approach a variety of neurological problems including instruction on key aspects of the clinical history, neurological examination, differential diagnosis, evaluation strategy, and management plan. Bedside teaching led by the supervising resident also allows for trainees to learn how to communicate complicated aspects of a neurological condition with the patient and parents. Residents are routinely involved in family meetings with faculty, and they often lead important discussions with the family and other consultants about prognosis and considerations of care.
In addition, utilizing a standardized curriculum, the residents give didactic lectures to rotating residents from adult neurology and pediatrics as well as Baylor medical students. Residents also lead weekly Section Rounds every Wednesday morning. Section Rounds involves the discussion of interesting patients seen by the Child Neurology Service along with a discussion of the underlying neurological condition. This is attended by all trainees as well as faculty from the division, to include faculty at remote sites who attend via an online webinar platform.
