Child Neurology Residency Program Director's Message

Timothy Edward Lotze, M.D.
Tim Lotze, M.D., Director, Pediatric Neurology Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in the Child Neurology Residency Program at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital!

Our program is designed to provide each resident with comprehensive integrated training in Child Neurology that prepares them for a successful and fulfilling career. We assure that each individual in our program achieves the essential milestones needed to become an outstanding child neurologist. Our program's strengths are based upon a large and diverse patient population as well as outstanding clinical facilities and a diverse faculty dedicated to training our residents with focused attention to each trainee. Residents selected for this program benefit from clinical, educational, and research experiences led by international leaders in their fields. Learn more about our Child Neurology faculty.

As a resident in our program, you will see a broad range of pediatric neurological diseases in infants, children and adolescents spanning from the common to the rare. You will attend lectures, team-based learning events, and multidisciplinary care conferences covering a diversity of topics to include neuroanatomy, neuroimaging, neuropathology, critical care, and all other aspects of pediatric neuroscience. As conferences are directly related to patients seen in the outpatient clinics or inpatient wards, there is immediate applicability to what is learned, which helps to further foster your growth as a child neurologist.

Our Institution highly values the abilities of our outstanding Clinician Educator faculty. In this regard, we also have trainees learn to become excellent clinician educators through focused conferences related to teaching methods and through interactions with other residents and medical students at Baylor. You will also have opportunities to engage in clinical and basic neuroscience research with our internationally recognized faculty.

Wellness is another critical aspect of being a good physician and delivering the best patient care. To help residents to achieve work-life balance, recognize fatigue, and prevent burnout, we have regular small group sessions guided by faculty to foster discussions about difficult but unavoidable aspects of residency and a career in medicine. This includes discussions on delivering bad news, managing conflict, patient death as well as strategies to acknowledge the emotional impact while finding outlets of relief.

We invest in and celebrate the diversity of our residents, fellows, faculty, and staff in the Program and in our Division through social events and action-oriented workshops.  In partnership with our adult neurology colleagues, our diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts have a broad focus to include outreach to our community schools as well as in mentoring students in higher education who have interest and tremendous potential in pursuing a career in the neurosciences.

Texas Children’s Hospital has been consistently ranked high by the U.S News and World Report.  For several years, Texas Children's has held the position of the #1 children’s hospital in Texas, and it has also been in the top 3 nationally.  In addition, we are nationally ranked #2 for Pediatric Neurology and Neurosurgery for 2023-2024.  We are especially proud to be listed as a top 5 Child Neurology Residency Program by Doximity.

While Texas Children’s Hospital is where residents spend most of their training in Child Neurology, they also have outstanding adult neurology learning opportunities in our affiliated training sites to include Ben Taub Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, and the Baylor College of Medicine Outpatient Clinic Building. In collaboration with our colleagues from BCM Adult Neurology, residents work with top experts in these state-of-the-art facilities. In addition, residents in our basic neuroscience pathway have outstanding opportunities at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, where they will be mentored by top scientists in the only Institute in the country dedicated solely to the pediatric neurosciences.

The current growth of child neurology and neurosciences at Baylor College of Medicine makes this an exciting time to join our team and be at the forefront of innovative patient care, research and education. Please feel free to contact us with questions, and we look forward to your application to our training program!
