About the Lab

Our simulation lab is a high-fidelity lab consisting of state-of-the-art simulation equipment, as well as control and debriefing rooms.

Promoting Patient Safety Through Simulation

The Department of Anesthesiology has utilized simulation for many years to teach residents critical skills in a simulated operating room environment. We have a dedicated anesthesiology simulation center in the heart of the medical school. This state of the art facility comprises a mock operating room, a high-tech control room and a debriefing room where residents can watch recorded scenarios in which they participated.

During their first few sessions, residents in their first year of training learn in a relaxed environment and emphasis is placed on the PGY-1 acquiring the following basic skills:

  • Preparing the anesthesia machine for a patient
  • Setting up for a case and using basic monitors
  • Progressing through the sequence of a general anesthetic

At the CA-1 through CA-3 levels, residents are trained in a team environment in a wide variety of simulation-based competencies, including:

  • Pre-operative patient assessment and formulation of anesthetic plans
  • Advanced airway management
  • Advanced management of common and rare perioperative emergencies
  • Crisis resource management
  • Teamwork
  • Communication and interpersonal team dynamics
  • Professionalism

The instructors use simulation training as an additional mechanism to prepare residents for the oral board examination.

We have multiple types of simulation equipment available for residency training, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • A human patient simulator mannequin
  • Full anesthesia workstation with equipment
  • Anesthesia monitors
  • Central line training station
  • Ultrasound machine
  • Mannequins to practice ultrasound guided nerve blocks and neuraxial techniques
  • High-fidelity TEE simulator
  • Video recording for debriefing sessions
