Division of Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience

Texas Children’s Hospital Skyline
The Division of Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine, in collaboration with Texas Children’s Hospital, is one of the largest child neurology programs in the United States. It is ranked #2 in Pediatric Neurology & Neurosurgery by U.S. News and World Report 2021-2022.

Division Overview

The Division of Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience consists of 60 faculty members comprised of pediatric neurologists, developmental pediatricians, neuropsychologists, neurophysiologists, research scientists, and nurse practitioners; the division encompasses an impressive range of knowledge and expertise. Total division staff consists of over 130 individuals working together to provide the most compassionate and up-to-date care for children with neurological disorders.

With over 20,000 scheduled visits to our neurology clinics each year, providers see patients from across the United States and from around the world with a diverse array of neurological conditions ranging from the common to the very rare. Patients are seen in the Blue Bird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology, several sub-specialty neurology clinics and at Texas Children's Health Centers located throughout the greater Houston area.

The division also supports excellent training programs in clinical child neurology, developmental pediatrics and basic science research. Trainees benefit from close interaction with faculty scientists and physicians, state of the art facilities and access to a large and diverse patient population. Many prior graduates of our training programs have gone on to distinguished careers as clinicians and scientists and have made important contributions to neurological care and research.

It is an exciting time for research in Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience, with numerous developments in clinical and basic science research underway. A wide range of clinical research projects is currently being conducted and planned that reflects the diverse specialties of our providers and the disorders they treat. Likewise, basic science neurology research is undergoing a transformation with the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, a one-of-a-kind facility which is bringing a new era of discovery and understanding to neurological disorders in children.

Benefactors

The late Houston businessman Dan Duncan and his wife, Texas Children's Hospital trustee Jan Duncan, generously donated $50 million to support the creation and development of the new Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's. Their landmark gift, the largest ever given to Texas Children's, will fund collaborative research, education and identification of new treatments for disorders including autism, epilepsy and cerebral palsy, as well as learning disorders.

Anthony Petrello, a member of the Texas Children's Hospital Board of Trustees, and his wife Cynthia launched a fundraising effort to help establish the Texas Children's Neurological Research Institute, a research-based center of excellence in pediatric neurosciences. Their $5 million private donation will help create a facility that combines clinical, educational and research programs focused on children with mental or neurological disorders.

Founded in Houston in 1923, The Blue Bird Circle is an organization of women volunteers dedicated to community improvement through acts of charity and service. Baylor College of Medicine Pediatric Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience receives invaluable support from the organization through its sponsorship of Texas Children's Blue Bird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology, the Blue Bird Circle Developmental Neurogenetics Laboratory, and the Blue Bird Circle Rett Center. Blue Bird volunteers raise over $1 million annually and contribute over 100,000 hours of service each year in support of neurological research and patient care.

The Gordon and Mary Cain Pediatric Neurology Research Foundation Laboratories were established in 1992 to conduct research into the underlying causes of epilepsy and other disorders of neurological development. Through the generous financial support of the late Houston businessman and philanthropist, Gordon Cain, the laboratories have generated significant discoveries relating to neurological function and disease and are able provide multidisciplinary training for a new generation of neuroscientists.
