Development and User Testing of a Decision Aid for Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) Placement (Blumenthal-Barby PI; Bruce Co-I)

Content

The goal of this study is to create a patient-centered decision aid that presents outcomes, risks, experiences, and uncertainties about ventricular assist device placement in a clear, comprehensive, scientifically-valid, and unbiased manner to help heart failure patients make informed and value-based decisions about VAD placement. The research team will be working regularly with three patient representatives to ensure that their research is truly reflective of patient needs and perspectives. The project is a collaborative endeavor between BCM and The Houston Methodist J.C. Walter Jr. Transplant Center. The research team is very multi-disciplinary with co-investigators from ethics (Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby Ph.D. and Courtenay Bruce, J.D.), decision science (Robert Volk, Ph.D.), qualitative and quantitative methods (Sheryl McCurdy, Ph.D., Charles Minard, Ph.D.), and cardiology and cardiovascular surgery (Jerry Estep, M.D., Matthias Loebe, M.D., Ph.D., and Brian Bruckner, M.D.)
