Track Director – Robin Livingston, M.D.

The Interventional Psychiatry Track provides specialized training for residents in their PGY3 and PGY4 years. Residents can apply as PGY2 residents to participate in the track the following year. The goal of the track is to provide additional, specialized clinical training and scholarship experiences in interventional psychiatry modalities such as electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), ketamine/esketamine, deep brain stimulation (DBS), and others. The track is especially meant for individuals who seek to expand their understanding of interventional psychiatry techniques and develop skills in their application to patient care.

Track Elements

Specialized Clinical Training experiences in Interventional Psychiatry

PGY3:

  • Ben Taub Hospital ECT rotation
  • Baylor Psychiatry Clinic (BPC) Interventional Psychiatry Longitudinal Experience
    • General BPC medication management clinic with incorporated TMS clinic and OCD Center for Excellence experiences

Or

  • MEDVAMC Treatment-Resistant Depression Consult Clinic
    • In-depth clinical experience in the evaluation and management of patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Will include second-opinion evaluations, advanced pharmacologic strategies, neuromodulation therapies (e.g., ECT, TMS, ketamine), and integrated psychotherapeutic approaches.
  • Optional MEDVAMC Academic Elective utilized to engage in scholarly project in Interventional Psychiatry

PGY4:  At least 4 months of Interventional Psychiatry experiences tailored to the individual resident interest in the area of Interventional Psychiatry

Selection Process

Applications for the Interventional Psychiatry Track are solicited in winter for interested PGY2 residents. The availability of positions will be announced each year, typically 1-2 residents.

Mentorship

Interventional Psychiatry track residents will have an assigned track mentor throughout their PGY3 and PGY4 year. Mentors will provide support of scholarly activity, career guidance and support for transition to practice.

Scholarly Work and Professional Development

Interventional Psychiatry track residents are supported through protected time, coaching, and mentorship to complete a scholarly project in an area of interest in Interventional Psychiatry. They will be supported to publish and/or present their project at a national meeting. Track residents will also provide education to their peers and medical students on interventional psychiatry through lectures and informal teaching sessions.
