Section Highlights

  • The Advanced Heart Failure team at Baylor St. Luke’s increased transplant volume by 24 percent, launched a “Donation after Circulatory Death” protocol and implemented the Organ Care Heart System to expand the donor pool.
  • The section completed preclinical studies for the first-in-human implantation of the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart, advancing next-generation mechanical circulatory support.
  • Ben Taub Hospital earned Gold, Gold Plus and Platinum Awards from the AHA and ACC for excellence in STEMI, NSTEMI and heart failure care, while also reducing outpatient echo wait times from 60 to 14 days and new patient wait times from 400 to 60 days.
  • The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center was the first VA in the nation to perform cardiac contractile modulation and MICRA leadless right atrial implantation, and expanded its capabilities with MitraClip, cryoballoon AFib ablation and advanced plaque modification therapies.
  • The faculty secured $1.13 million in research funding, including a $30.7 million PCORI grant awarded to Dr. Mihail Chelu, AHA and VA diversity grants to Dr. Arunima Misra and an artificial intelligence grant to Dr. Tyler Moran.
  • The cardiovascular disease fellowship program won the ACC Jeopardy championship, implemented simulation-based training for echocardiography, and expanded educational offerings through “Evenings with the Experts” and the Houston EP Fellows Lecture Series.
