2025 News

American College of Cardiology’s 2025 Annual Scientific Session

On March 29-31, 2025, faculty, fellows, residents, and even a high schooler from the Section of Cardiology presented in 30 presentations at the American College of Cardiology’s 2025 Annual Scientific Session in Chicago, Illinois., including two simultaneous publications in the New England Journal of Medicine and Journal of the American College of Cardiology. Christie Ballantyne was elected President

Christie Ballantyne was elected President of National Lipid Association for the 2024-2025 term.  The National Lipid Association goal is to enhance the science and practice of lipidology and promote optimal cardiometabolic health.

Biykem Bozkurt, M.D., Ph.D.

Bozkurt Earns Leadership Award

Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, professor of medicine – cardiology and senior dean of faculty, was announced as the recipient of the 2024 Distinguished Leadership Award from the Heart Failure Society of America for her work in education and mentorship. She will be recognized at HFSA’s annual scientific meeting in September in Atlanta.

Dr. Vanessa Medrano, Assistant Professor, Cardiology, and Sandra Stahl, Instructor - Nurse Practitioner, Cardiology, received the 2024 Power of Professionalism Award from BCM Center for Professionalism. This award recognizes the positive actions of students, residents, fellows, post-docs, faculty and any member of our support staff or administration.

Dr. Syed Zaid appointed Associate Editor of JACC Case Reports

Dr. Syed Zaid, Assistant Professor, Cardiology, was appointed Associate Editor of JACC Case Reports. This remarkable achievement was accomplished within nine months of fellowship graduation.

Guilherme Vianna Silva, M.D., F.A.C.C., received the 2024 Baylor College of Medicine Star Award for Excellence in Patient Care. This award is provided to faculty that demonstrate clinical excellence and expertise with consistently high quality of patient care.

Cardiology fellows win The American College of Cardiology Fellows In Training Jeopardy Finals

Congratulations to Cardiology Fellows Jerin George, Anupama BK, and Riyad Kherallah, for winning the The American College of Cardiology Fellows In Training Jeopardy Finals!

ACC FIT Jeopardy is a friendly competition between fellows-in-training from around the world that uses Jeopardy categories based on the American Board of Internal Medicine Cardiovascular Disease Exam Blueprint. The competition is hosted by the American College of Cardiology and is considered one of the year's most anticipated events. The competition is game show-style and fosters engagement in FIT and ECP.

  • March 8: Roger Blumenthal presented the Edward Dennis Memorial Lecture
  • March 29: Steve Ommen presented the JK Alexander Memorial Lecture
  • April 12: Timothy Henry presented the John Lewis Interventional Lecture
  • May 3: Jon Kobashigawa presented the Don Chapman Memorial Lecture
