Orthopedic Surgery Residency Training Sites

Our residents train at an exceptional variety of hospitals, most of which are located within walking distance in the Texas Medical Center.

In addition to the wide variety of training sites, our residents have the opportunity to practice skills in our simulation labs.

Service Lines

Foot and Ankle Service

Foot Service consists of orthopedists specializing in surgery of the foot and ankle. On this service, residents will participate in patient evaluation, adult reconstructive surgery of the foot and ankle, and ankle arthroscopy at Baylor Medicine at McNair Campus and Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Orthopedics. The service also maintains a weekly foot and ankle clinic at Ben Taub Hospital and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Hand Surgery Service

Hand Service is a multi-hospital based service designed to provide the complete exposure to acute, reconstructive and congenital hand surgery. The resident is involved in multi-disciplinary care of the hand and upper extremity under the supervision of the hand staff. Hand clinics, surgery and patient care occur at Baylor Medicine at McNair Campus, Ben Taub Hospital, the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Texas Children's Hospital. The service experience includes microsurgery, the entire spectrum of upper extremity surgery for acute trauma, reconstructive surgery, brachial plexus, myocutaneous flaps, replantations, joint replacement, congenital deformities, and arthroscopy.

Oncology Service

Oncology Service at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center is oriented to provide a comprehensive approach to the tumor systems affecting the musculoskeletal system. Emphasis is placed on the staging and diagnosis of primary and secondary neoplasms through a multi-discipline approach. Exposure is provided to pediatric and medical oncologists, as well as interventional and diagnostic radiologists. Routinely, a histopathologic study and review directed by pathologists with vast experience in musculoskeletal pathology is done weekly. Surgical exposure is extensive, involving three full-time orthopedic oncologists' practices.

Pediatric Orthopedics

Pediatric Orthopedics is based at the Level 1 trauma center in Texas Children's Hospital (Main Campus and West Campus). This rotation includes broad exposure to all aspects of pediatric orthopedics from minor fractures to complex congenital orthopedic problems. This rotation also includes a weekly topical journal club, a pre-operative indications and morbidity conference, and the Greater Houston Pediatric Orthopedic Grand Rounds Conference.

Spine Service

Spine Service is a multi-hospital based service at Baylor Medicine at McNair Campus, Ben Taub Hospital, and Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center . This service provides the residents with a comprehensive experience in traumatic and degenerative diseases of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine with a nationally recognized faculty.

Sports Medicine Service

Sports Medicine Service is also a multi-hospital (Baylor Medicine at McNair Campus, Ben Taub Hospital, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Orthopedics, and the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center) based service designed to provide a comprehensive exposure to sports injuries and their treatment. The service provides extensive experience with the diagnosis, office management, and surgical treatment of sports-related injuries, emphasizing the knee and shoulder. The surgical experience emphasizes arthroscopy.

Total Joints Service

Training in hip and knee arthroplasty occurs at Baylor Medicine at McNair Campus and Kelsey-Seybold Clinic Orthopedics. The service provides exposure to all aspects of total hip and knee arthroplasty. Surgeons performing surgeries through multiple approaches utilizing multiple implant systems. There is extensive exposure to complex primary and revision procedures as well as robotically assisted arthroplasty.

Trauma Service

Training in orthopedic trauma occurs across all rotations, with a particular emphasis at Ben Taub General Hospital. Residents receive comprehensive training in evaluation and treatment of acute trauma of the spine, pelvis, and lower and upper extremities, as well as limb salvage and chronic sequelae of fractures such as non-unions, mal-unions, infection, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Veterans Service

Veterans Service is based at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The MEDVAMC provides resident training in all phases of adult orthopedics. This includes joint replacement, spine, hand, foot and ankle, shoulder and knee, trauma, and tumor surgery. We have the busiest orthopedic surgery service in the VA system and it provides a high volume clinical and surgical experience.

Medical Missions

There are also opportunities to spend two weeks in Guatemala on medical missions with faculty through Faith in Practice. This is a non-profit, ecumenical Christian organization that seeks to improve the physical, spiritual and economic conditions of the poor in Guatemala through short-term surgical, medical and dental mission trips and health-related educational programs. This experience provides exposure to complex arthroplasty and trauma cases. Participating faculty: John “Jack” Dawson, M.D., and Melvyn Harrington, M.D.
