Pelvic Floor Health

The Pelvic Floor Health Center is a multidisciplinary program that specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of defecation disorders and other disorders of the pelvic floor, including fecal incontinence, constipation, rectovaginal fistulas, pelvic organ prolapse and neurogenic bowel disorders. We offer a comprehensive approach with coordinated medical and surgical management of pelvic floor dysfunction, supported by an expert nursing team. Our surgeons provide the most advanced care available, including minimally invasive robotic and laparoscopic surgery, as well as highly specialized pelvic health physical therapy. A multidisciplinary approach is especially helpful for patients with pelvic floor dysfunction and previous surgical intervention, pelvic floor trauma and/or obstetrics injury during vaginal delivery.

Conditions Treated

Bowel and urinary incontinence refers to the inability to control the release of feces, gas or urine from the body. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including muscle weakness, nerve damage or certain medical conditions. There are treatments available to help manage these symptoms and improve quality of life.

Constipation is a common digestive problem that causes difficulty in passing stool. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including a lack of fiber in the diet, dehydration, medications, and certain health conditions. Symptoms may include infrequent bowel movements, hard or lumpy stool, abdominal discomfort or pain, and bloating. Treatment typically involves lifestyle changes, such as increasing fiber and water intake, and sometimes medication to help soften the stool or stimulate bowel movements.

A rectocele is a medical condition where the rectum bulges into the back wall of the vagina. It can cause difficulty with bowel movements and may require surgical intervention.

A urinary, vaginal, or rectal fistula is a medical condition where a hole develops between the urinary, vaginal or rectal tract and the surrounding tissue. This can cause leakage of urine, feces, or gas through the fistula, leading to discomfort and embarrassment. Treatment options may include surgery, medication or a combination of both, depending on the severity of the fistula.

Pelvic organ prolapse is a condition where one or more of the pelvic organs (such as the bladder, uterus or rectum) descends from their normal position and pushes against the walls of the vagina. This can lead to discomfort or even pain.

Sexual difficulties caused by pelvic floor conditions can significantly impact one's quality of life. Thankfully, with the help of medical professionals, there are treatment options available that can help address these conditions. Whether through exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, medication, or other interventions, there is hope for individuals experiencing sexual difficulties as a result of pelvic floor conditions. It is important to speak with a healthcare provider to determine the best course of action for your specific situation.

Pelvic pain caused by pelvic floor conditions can be a challenging issue to deal with. Fortunately, there are a number of effective treatments available to help manage this type of pain. These may include physical therapy, medication, or even surgery in some cases. Your doctor can help determine the best course of action for your specific situation. Remember to always be open and honest about your symptoms and concerns with your healthcare provider to ensure the best possible outcome.

What is the Pelvic Floor?

Scott Holmes, CMI
From the top the urethra, vaginal canal, pubococcygeus m., rectum, iliococcygeusm., and coccygeus m. are illustrated.

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles and connective tissue in the pelvic area. These muscles help to support organs in your pelvis like a sling. The organs in this area include the bladder, vagina, and uterus (women), prostate (men), and rectum (the organ connected to the colon or large intestine). Bowel and bladder emptying are controlled by contracting and relaxing these muscles.

What is Pelvic Floor Dysfunction?

When you are unable to control the muscles in your pelvic floor, this could affect your ability to have a bowel or bladder movement, and this is called pelvic floor dysfunction. This is a fairly common condition that affects both men and women of all ages. Unfortunately, it is vastly undertreated, leaving millions to struggle with life-altering symptoms that can be addressed with appropriate medical treatment. It is important to note that pelvic floor dysfunction and defecation disorders can be successfully treated and that this is not a normal part of aging.

Diagnostic Testing

Since pelvic floor dysfunction can result from multiple factors and conditions, we take a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and care. Our team utilizes state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic technology to help pinpoint causes of your pelvic health dysfunction.
