Baylor College of Medicine scholarships that recognize academic achievement and other non-financial need criteria are typically awarded to outstanding students when funds are available. Students are notified by the appropriate office once eligibility is determined. Merit-based scholarship eligibility is not determined by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Information referencing outside scholarships is available for students to review in the Office of Student Financial Aid and the Student Commons Newsletter. You will also find scholarship information in the reference section of your local library. These scholarships are "gift aid" and are not repaid. Baylor College of Medicine awards them to medical students who are from a disadvantaged background and demonstrate need. Funding is limited and not guaranteed to be awarded every year. Students must apply annually. Parental data is required on FAFSA and US Tax Returns must be provided in order to be considered for these funds.

Students awarded a need base scholarship and later request a reduction in aid offers that should cover the full cost of attendance, will be re-evaluated. Proof of additional documentation is required as well an in-person interview in order to determine if the student is truly disadvantaged and eligible to keep or cancel the original scholarship offered. The Office of Student Financial Aid will contact students if this applies to them.

Generally, financial aid checks and e-refund deposits are disbursed at the beginning of each semester. All financial aid (loans, merit and need base scholarships awards) are first credited to each student's account to pay tuition and fee charges.

Once all charges are paid, any remaining credit will be refunded to the student to be used to pay for books, supplies and living expenses.  Refunds are processed by the office of Student Account Services. Student may elect to receive refunds either by Direct Deposit or by check, mailed to the student’s home address of record.  For questions about refund processing or to enroll in Direct Deposit, please contact Student Account Services at SAS@bcm.edu or by phone at (713) 798-4322.

If you are receiving VA educational benefits, your refund will be reviewed prior to issuance.Students receiving VA education benefits (Chapter 33/Post 9/11): The net cost of tuition and fees are assessed at Baylor College of Medicine after the application of any waiver of, or reduction in, tuition and fees; and any scholarship, or other Federal, State, institutional, or employer-based aid or assistance (excluding loans).
