Physician Publications

The following are several books on neonatal topics that were authored or co-authored by our faculty.

Guidelines for Acute Care of the Neonate, 33rd Edition (2025–2026)

Editors: Fernandes, C.J., Pammi, M.

Section Editors: Cavazos R.E., Davies, J., Dinu, D., Gandhi, B., Gannon, M.C., Garcia-Prats, J.A., Gokulakrishnan, G., Gowda, S.H., Guillory C., Hair, A.B., Johnson, K.E., Joseph, C., King, A., Mandy, G., McKee-Garrett, T.M., Osborne S.W., Parmekar, S., Patel, M.J., Patil, M., Placencia, F.X., Premkumar, M.H., Reyes, M.K., Rhee, C.J., Shah, R., Shivanna, B., Speer, M.E., Sundgren N.

The 'Guidelines' were created to help neonatology fellows, pediatric house officers, and others at Baylor College of Medicine affiliated hospitals with the usual routines followed in caring for common problems encountered in the care of neonates. These guidelines are reviewed and revised annually (or more frequently as necessary) by the Division of Neonatology following two levels of peer review of the published medical literature and state of the art as practiced elsewhere in the country. Where appropriate, national guidelines or reference to peer-reviewed scientific investigations are cited to help in the decision-making process; regional traits unique to the southeast Texas patient population are used when appropriate.

The Guidelines document is copyrighted and is intended for use by authorized medical personnel at BCM-affiliated hospitals only. With the vision of improving neonatal care and outcomes globally, the Guidelines document is being made available to all who desire it.

The prior (32nd) edition was downloaded over 2,597 times from 85 countries!

You may obtain a free PDF copy of the document for your own personal use below, if you agree not to modify, copy or distribute the document.

You must complete the agreement prior to downloading the guidelines.

NOTE: Due to technical difficulties, the guidelines are not emailed automatically so there will be a delay.

Contemporary Diagnosis and Management of Neonatal Respiratory Diseases

Thomas N. Hansen, M.D., and Leonard E. Weisman, M.D., Editors. Handbooks in Health Care Co., 2002, 3rd edition, 301 pages.

An explosion of new information about the pathophysiologic processes involved in diseases of the respiratory system of the newborn has led to improved treatments, such as surfactant replacement, that have markedly reduced morbidity and mortality in this vulnerable population.

The third edition of this book reviews the epidemiology, pathophysiology, presentation, management, and outcomes for respiratory disorders affecting the newborn, and has updated reviews of pulmonary physiology, ventilatory and non-ventilatory management of respiratory distress. Supportive care that is necessary to optimize outcome is emphasized through sections on nutritional and gastrointestinal support, communications with parents, ethical consideration, and discharge planning.
