Fellows in the Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship Program receive their clinical training in a number of medical facilities. Baylor College of Medicine has teaching affiliations with several hospitals in the Texas Medical Center—the largest incorporated medical center in the world—as well as alliances with other hospitals in the Houston community. Training sites include Texas Children’s Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital, and the Meyer Center for Developmental Pediatrics.
Each institution makes an important contribution to the overall educational experience, including care of very low birth weight babies and those born with congenital heart disease or conditions requiring surgery.
Baylor-affiliated hospitals deliver more than 30,000 babies per year. Our neonatal intensive care units annually average more than 4,500 admissions. Of these, about 350 are very low birth weight neonates (<1500 g) and 200 have congenital heart disease.

Texas Children’s Hospital West Tower
In the Texas Children's Hospital Tower nearly 2,500 infants are cared for each year in this 76-bed-level-3/4 unit. Neonates admitted to this unit are of the highest acuity, usually needing multiple pediatric and surgical subspecialists. In addition to common neonatal diagnoses, there are unique cohorts of patients within the unit with their own dedicated interdisciplinary team focused on providing excellent clinical care while conducting research to pioneer new treatments and cures.

All admissions to the West Tower NICU are either transferred from regional area hospitals or born in the Pavilion for Women. On average, 380 neonates are admitted to the West Tower NICU each year.
The collaboration and partnership with a multitude of ancillary services makes the West Tower NICU a rich educational experience while also providing excellent care for the most critically ill neonates. Care teams are composed of an attending neonatologist, a neonatology fellow, neonatal nurse practitioners, bedside nurse, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, neonatal nutritionist, care manager, social worker, chaplain, and most importantly each patient’s family. Our NICU is family centered with no limitations on visiting hours.
