Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine Research

The Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine Section has strong nationally recognized research programs in lung diseases and critical care medicine.

The faculty performs a broad spectrum of research activities including investigations into the molecular mechanisms of lung diseases and translational research studies, and clinical trials. Clinical trials include Phase I, II and III studies, and are conducted in various hospitals and clinics in the Texas Medical Center. The research in the section is supported by $4.8 million from federal and private research grants.

Areas of active research in the section include an investigation into the pathogenesis and potential novel therapeutic strategies for asthma, chronic obstructive lung diseases, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, transition medicine, lung transplant, lung cancer, and cystic fibrosis.

The section also conducts clinical trials or research protocols – to test whether a new drug, new prevention, diagnostic strategy, or new screening test is safe and effective in people. Participation is always voluntary. The investigators in our section conduct hundreds of studies, ranging from small, short-term studies to large trials with thousands of patients across many institutions.
