What and How We Do Our Research
The CNRC Energy Metabolism Unit (EMU) is a highly specialized unit and includes the room calorimetry suite. Our unit has been instrumental in determining the energy requirements of different activity levels in children, toddlers and pregnant mothers; in the use of doubly labeled water method to study free living energy expenditure in children and mothers; and in the use of accelerometry to generate equations to estimate physical activity level in children and toddlers validated against physical activity level measured in the room calorimeter.
Our capabilities combined with other resources housed on the MRU including the body composition unit, the metabolic kitchen and the stable isotope laboratory provide unique infrastructure for the conduct of nutrition and metabolic studies in women and children.
