Bartoli Lab Members

Eleonora Bartoli

woman smiling

Eleonora obtained her Ph.D. in Robotics, Cognition and Interaction Technology from the Italian Institute of Technology. She moved to Houston “just for a few years” to further develop her interest in human electrophysiology and brain stimulation and ended up finding her home at Baylor College of Medicine and starting a lab in the Department of Neurosurgery. She is also Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Rice University.

Neuroscience apart, she loves climbing (although Texas makes that difficult), visiting National Parks (she would like to see them all) and photography (mainly of her cats, but she is open to other critters too).

Ryan Jafri

man smiling outside

Ryan Jafri is a recent transfer student at Rice University on the pre-med track. He is intrigued by neuroscience and he is working on a project that is comparing the spectral content of intracranial signals recorded in white matter vs gray matter. In his free time Ryan likes to play basketball, play chess, cook and recover from knee injuries. For the summer of 2025 he was selected to be a part of the BCM SMART program (Summer Undergraduate Research Training).

Jung Uk Kang

man smiling in front of grey background

In 2023, Jung Uk received his PhD in neuroscience at Washington University School of Medicine after completing his thesis research on the role of inter-areal communication in macaque posterior parietal cortex in motor coordination. In 2024, he joined the lab of Dr. Sameer Sheth at Baylor College of Medicine as a postdoctoral associate, and he collaborates with Dr. Eleonora Bartoli and Dr. Benjamin Hayden. He currently works on a human neurophysiology project studying the role of communication across different brain areas in motor inhibition. This work has implications in inhibition control in health and disease, and could be extended to clinical care for psychiatric disorders such as addiction, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Outside of lab, he enjoys biking, drumming, and tennis.

He is passionate about translational research and public health, and loves to keep exploring new hobbies. In his free time, Sanjay loves to play the tabla (an Indian drum), travel, and try new foods.

Lab Alumni

Davin worked in the lab from June 2024 to June 2025 while taking a research gap year during his medical school training from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso, Texas. During his time, he studied the effect of different recording reference electrodes on the neural signals recorded intracranially from patients with epilepsy.

Maria (MSc. in Biomedical Engineering) worked in the lab from February 2023 to June 2024. Her primary focus revolved around signal processing and peak detection in electrophysiological responses to brain stimulation, as part of a collaborative project with Rice University. After leaving the lab, she moved to Germany to pursue her career as a Biomedical Engineer.

Sanath participated in summer research activity in the lab (Summer 2024) while pursuing a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He developed an Arduino-based keyboard to obtain high precision response time for some of the experiments performed in the lab.
