Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship

Curriculum

The program accommodates a total of two fellows each academic year. Each training year is divided into two six-month blocks.
Clinical sites and rotations:

  • Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC)
    • Inpatient Consultation Liaison
    • Organ Transplantation
    • Behavioral Medicine Clinics (including Primary Care-Mental Health Integration, Infectious Diseases, Cardiology, Hematology & Oncology, Palliative Care, and other electives)
  • Texas Children’s Hospital – Pavilion for Women (TCH-PW)

Didactics

  • Core CL series - weekly
  • Case conferences and journal clubs - biweekly
  • Departmental Grand Rounds – weekly
  • Inter-fellowship case conference - monthly

Research-scholarly work

CLP faculty mentors are assigned to work with trainees to assist with identification and successful completion of scholarly work in research and Quality Improvement.  

Teaching

Fellows participate in teaching medical students and/or resident lectures in a variety of topics. Fellows historically have provided at least one lecture for the general psychiatry residency didactic series and are provided with instruction and feedback on teaching. Formal teaching opportunities also exist for a variety of clinical disciplines and medical trainees, including medical students, physician assistant students/residents, pharmacy students/residents, and advanced practice nursing students among others. In addition to clinical responsibilities, mentorship is provided through both formal and informal supervision of fellows by the clinical faculty.

Admissions

ERAS Fellowship Dates

  • July 3: Applicants may begin submitting applications in ERAS
  • July 17, 8 a.m. CST: ERAS releases applications to programs

NRMP Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship Dates

  • Oct. 16, 11 a.m. CST: Match opens
  • Nov. 6, 11 a.m. CST: Ranking opens
  • Dec. 4, 10:59 p.m. CST: Quota (number of positions to be filled) change deadline
  • Dec. 18, 8 p.m. CST: Rank order list certification deadline
  • Jan. 8, 11 a.m. CST: Match Day

Admission requirements include:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • One-page personal statement
  • Three letters of recommendation (including letter from current program director)
  • Dean’s letter from medical school
  • Official transcript from medical school
  • Copy of medical school diploma
  • Copies of USMLE scores (1, 2 and 3)
  • Valid ECFMG certificate, if graduated from medical school outside of the United States
  • Certificates of completion from any previous residency training program(s) and/or letter(s) of support from any previous residency training director

Applicants can submit their materials through ERAS, beginning with Academic Year 2024-2025. 

After all applications have been received, candidates may be eligible to interview with the program faculty and receive a tour within the affiliated clinics/hospitals.
